Maggie Ross doesn't mince words. She is direct and when critical , can be quite cutting (and funny with it, on occasions) but no one will ever doubt her passion for things of God, which is why this almost prophetic book speaks as it does.

It is about priesthood, and she begins right from the beginning, with some shrewd and pertinent observations about how potential priests are chosen, and the ridiculous contradiction between the expectation of spiritual, "other-worldly" men and women for the vocation, but methods used are those of a business looking for extrovert salespeople. The rest of the book is similarly perceptive, and leaves anyone involved in church life feeling somewhat stripped and naked.

I don't think anyone would doubt the veracity of what she says when pointing out the very real flaws of the modern church. I did feel, however, that some of her solutions were rather simplistic. Dealing with groups of people, particularly in an age when everyone is their own authority, takes some skill, and her straightforward idealistic suggestions sometimes make one aware of the solitary nature of her calling. It isn't that easy.

I would say that this work is a large, clear, accurate mirror held up to the modern church, and someone whose calling is a little different would be able to put things right in a church that badly needs it. Such a person would be well-guided by and well advised in reading this book.

Maggie Ross 'gets it' about what
s wrong with mainstream Christianity and the clergy. Read this book and you will know you're not crazy for thinking the Church has become a big business and clergy are required to be its managers. Not much soul in that paradigm!
