This review is from: Pillars of the Earth Expansion (Toy)
The original Pillars game is one of my favorites. I like it right up there with Stone Age, Dominion, and Puerto Rico, and this expansion really adds to the game play.
Here is why I like it:

1. Most importantly it takes it from a 4 player game to a 5-6 player game; this is huge because too often we have more than 4 and are pigeon-holed into the games we can play.

2. The expansion really adds some great cards and master builder placement spots to the game, balancing it a bit more. It makes getting the gold-for-wood card, or the free resource cards not quite as powerful, and opens up the strategy.

3. It just adds more intrigue to an already great game.
Have Fun!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything an expansion should be., January 16, 2012

** This is not a stand alone game. You MUST have a base copy of The Pillars of the Earth to play. **

This expansion enhances the already phenomenal base game significantly. The balance is even better, up to 6 people can play now, and everything in the expansion is usable even if you just want to play with the traditional 2-4 players.

The centerpiece of the expansion is a board extension that adds five more areas that resolve in the action phase (between actions 9 and 10 of the core game).

Four of the areas are places for master builders:
9a: exemption from taxes and collect income equal to the tax roll.
9c: allows you to use any craftsman this round at one less than normal capacity. This can be one of your own that was already used or one of another player.
9d: sell resources at one more than normal market prices.
9e: another slot for privilege cards. They are now separated into two categories (permanent in one pile and immediate or 1x in the other).

The remaining new area (9b) has four spots extra workers can be placed for victory points.

It also includes new event, craftsmen and privilege cards, as well as all the components needed for two more players. Everything here fits in with the original game perfectly and it should be an instant purchase if you enjoy The Pillars of the Earth.

Highly recommended.
