I usually buy the uni-ball Signo Gel 207 Retractable Roller Ball Pen, Medium Point, Translucent Barrel, Black Ink, 12-Pack (33950), which cost $20 for a dozen, so a single pen costing $20 should be a LOT better. To my surprise, it is. The first thing I noticed was the packaging, which, in my opinion, is a waste of money. I suppose you could use it to store the pen, but for me, it would be annoying, so even though the packaging is nice, I'd rather have basic packaging & a lower cost. On the other hand, it's a nice touch if you're giving the pen as a gift, so for that specific purpose, it's a nice premium.

The pen itself has a nice weight & feel to it, and the metal barrel is strong enough to withstand some "moderate" force without bending or denting. Since I use a magnet to hold my pens, I was hoping the metal barrel would be fully magnetic, but it's not, so I hang it like I do with my other pens, using the clip to connect with the magnet.

The "dimples" on the barrel are really tiny, and don't provide much resistance, but since the pen is finished in a matte black, it's not as slippery as it may be with a more polished finish, so slippage isn't a problem I've run into.

As long as the price for the refills is reasonable (currently, about five dollars for a 2-pack), I expect to be using this pen for quite a while.

I'm guessing that when a lot of people think "quality" pens, the names Montblanc or AT Cross probably come too mind first. These brands and a few others all make remarkable writing instruments (also know as pens!!) However, most non-pen geeks (I assure you that I most certainly am a card carrying pen geek) just want a pen that writes "nicely" - smooth flow, no skips, no blobs. Also, these "normal" folks want a pen that, should they lose it, they don't suffer financially or emotionally. For my non-pen-geek friends, that usually means a "hotel" stick pen. Cheap, disposable and, more important, losable without really experiencing a loss of any kind. Also know as ... Philistines!

Fortunately, I have discovered that Pilot makes several affordable, high quality pens that any pen geek would be happy to have in his or her shirt pocket or day planner. This selection from their Axiom collection qualifies as such a pen. Hefty feel. Good, solid "click". Wonderful, smooth blue ink refill that comes from a clear plastic refill so you can see how much ink is left (I like that a lot). It also has a good, firm clip so you can be assured it won't fall out of your pocket. It comes packed in a nice gift box with a magnetic clasp (wow) so if you decide to give it as a present, it sends the right message.

Rating: One star for the cool, black matte finish. One star for the firm click. One star for the superior refill. One star for the clip, and the neat box. The only reason this isn't a 5 star rating is that the barrel is a little slippery. They have engraved dimples where your fingers grip but these don't add much.

Your could easily make this your "one good pen" - recommended

The pen I have is Matte Black/Silver. It's all black with some grayish silver dots where you grip it. The dots are slightly textured, but don't aid in comfort or slip resistance. I don't think it looks particularly swanky.

The ink is blue and the pen has a medium point. It writes smoothly for a ball point pen. The ink dries quickly and doesn't smear.

It feels sturdy, but is a bit heavier and slightly bulkier than the cheaper pens I usually use.

The clicking mechanism is a little springy. It takes a longer press to engage the mechanism than I am used to.

It came in a gift box. It's a nice pen, but I don't understand who this is for. I suppose a gift for someone who you don't know very well, or a secret santa-type situation. Maybe the other colors are more eye-catching, but the matte black just looks like a regular pen to me.

The pen has a nice, solid feel to it. I like the good, clunky click it has. Less appealing is that it is rather slippery to hold. If, like me, you like to hold a pen very lightly, you might want something that grips better.

It looks attractive in its presentation box and would make a nice gift.

The writing is smooth, but I did notice that it can blot slightly at the beginning of each use. So not the best quality writing I've experienced from a ballpoint.

The refills are not expensive but take care to ensure you get the right ones, as it is not obvious.

Wonderful pen. It feels very nice and writes like something much more expensive and meanwhile isn't so expensive that losing it will be a disaster (though at $20 you won't be buying a ten-pack, at least I won't!).

I like that the ink inserts are inexpensive and (at least currently) available on Amazon.

This pen has all the perks of an expensive writing instrument for less cash.

I love several things about it:
-It's weighty. It has more weight than a normal run-of-the-mill pen and gives it an "expensive" pen feel.
-It's wider. I love the bigger barrel. Rather than some of these chunky marker pen styles, this one has a slim look but a decent size barrel to make it easier to write and fit better in your hand.
-It's smooth. The ink flows well and smoothly.
-It's easy! It's just easy to hold. The grips on the end add just enough to hold it steady without taking over and making the pen sticky- like other brands that use a plastic grip.

Overall, it's my favorite go-to pen!
