FriXion is Different From Other Erasable Pens

The technology used in FriXion erasable gel ink pens has been in the making for more than 30 years. Vibrant Autumn leaves inspired a Pilot researcher to capture the same dynamic color change in a test tube. A special formulation that would vividly change color at different temperatures was developed. The unique color-changing technology was initially used to create children's toys. Several years later, another Pilot researcher modified the formulation to create disappearing ink—and FriXion erasable gel ink pens were born!

Pilot FriXion
Erasing that works!

Note: FriXion erasable gel ink pens & highlighters are not recommended on legal documents. If pen is exposed to temperatures above 140 degrees Fahrenheit, the ink will be colorless when writing. To restore color, cool to at least 14 degrees Fahrenheit in a freezer and the ink will again write in color.

Considering some of the negative reviews, I am going to give a rebuttal since I once thought negatively of them also. I just came into some information that restored my faith in them. To all those purchasing these pilot erasable items (including their erasable pens), their ability to be erased lies with the fact that they utilize Thermo-sensitive ink that is removed by erasing friction. So, for some, like me, who left my highlighters in my hot car on a sunny day in Houston,TX, they may seemed to have stopped working. However, a note from their website reads: "Do not expose to extreme temperatures (<14 deg F; >140 deg F). If pen is exposed to temp that reaches 140 F, the ink will be colorless when writing. To restore color, cool to at least 14 F in freezer and the ink will again write in color."

So, I put my highlighters in the freezer (even though the note initially said do not expose the highlighter to <14deg but later says to put it in the freezer <14 F to restore color). Voila! Color is back and they highlight and erase as before.

Although, I'm not sure if this is actually the case with the negative reviews, I suggest those reviewers try the above before giving this really cool revolutionary product the shaft. If you did this and you're still having problems, then so be it, but at least point that out.

I gave this product 4 rather than 5 stars because I tried to contact the company a week ago when this happened by phone and by e-mail but still haven't received a response. Further, the package didn't mention the temperature sensitivity. Had I known, I wouldn't have been without my highlighters for the last week.

These highlighters are great for using on notebook paper, but not textbook pages. The highlighters will smear the printed ink in the textbook. Im updating my review after a month of having these highlighters and I just want to say they suck and to not waste your money. ALL of them are dried out now and I havent even used them a lot! Im going to the store and buying some BIC highlighters.

I gave it a 1 star because it does erase, but it smears the words in text, and the highlighting fluid runs out in approx. 1-2 days of use for serious readers. This is waste of money. Hope this helps.

I was so glad to have found these during my last semester of grad school!! I am a chronic highlighter (worksheets, readings, notes, etc) and usually found that I would highlight too much information for the marks to be valuable. These highlighters saved me! I was able to remove the marks I didn't need- because a concept was illustrated in a better way later in the reading... because I highlighted to the end of a line when the statement ended partway through. Only a few times did I notice that smudges remained, and those times I simply erased too soon and didn't give the ink time to dry.

I also work in a tutoring center and was able to astonish the students I work with as well as helping them with issues in math work or papers. I highlight the areas they needed to review, they look for the mistake and correct it, then I erase the marks and leave their corrected work unaltered.

I will always keep one of these highlighters and one of the Frixion gel pens with my calendar planner. I hate the way pencil looks and the smudges and the carbon-paper-like transfers, but the world changes way too much for the permanence of ink. I look forward to seeing how the two work together- whether the highlighter will smudge the pen much, how the whole mess erases and so on.

I never thought about the marks disappearing in a hot car, but it is worth it to pass on this tip from another review... put it in the freezer and the marks will come back, just like magic!

These pens are a lifesaver for quilters who for too long have struggled with trying to mark quilting lines with air or water erasable pens. And the water erasable pens were useless in the humid air of Hawaii. But these pens are great for marking stencils, then holding a warm or hot iron over the fabric (no need to press down) and voilà! the mark is gone.
Rumor has it that if the item gets cold, the color will return. I tried this out by marking the fabric, erasing the mark with heat and putting the fabric in the freezer for an hour. The mark did not return. I haven't tried it for a longer period of time, but when was the last time you put a quilt in the freezer or hung it outside in sub-zero temperatures?
The regular Frixxion ballpoint style pens work well too, but these are bright and easier to see. Go for it, quilters!

These highlighters are horrible!!! I am a law student and was using them for all of my textbooks. Besides the text smearing a bit when I try to erase things the highlighted parts of my texts are slowly erasing by themselves!!! It is horrible to open my book and see parts that used to be completely highlighted and all that is left is a slight and I mean slight smear of color!!!

Do not use these highlighters or buy them!! Not worth the money or the time that you will end up having to spend!
