FriXion is Different From Other Erasable Pens

The technology used in FriXion erasable gel ink pens has been in the making for more than 30 years. Vibrant Autumn leaves inspired a Pilot researcher to capture the same dynamic color change in a test tube. A special formulation that would vividly change color at different temperatures was developed. The unique color-changing technology was initially used to create children's toys. Several years later, another Pilot researcher modified the formulation to create disappearing ink—and FriXion erasable gel ink pens were born!

Pilot FriXion
Erasing that works!

Note: FriXion erasable gel ink pens & highlighters are not recommended on legal documents. If pen is exposed to temperatures above 140 degrees Fahrenheit, the ink will be colorless when writing. To restore color, cool to at least 14 degrees Fahrenheit in a freezer and the ink will again write in color.

Customer Questions & Answers

Customer Reviews

I love these pens because they write so smoothly and erase very well.
I use these pens to mark on my fabrics when I'm sewing, and when I am done I just iron over where I've marked and the ink disappears!

The Frixion pens are great for taking notes, and even better for drawing and sketching because they erase like a pencil.

I bought these pens for sewing! Yes, sewing with PENS not PINS! I had heard they were erasable from fabric, so I decided to give them a try. When used on fabric all you have to do is iron over the fabric with a steam iron and the marks disappear like magic! These are really great. I have sewn for years and had problems with marking fabrics. Old carbon paper is permanent, so watch out! Some markers wipe off before you get the item sewn. Other markers are supposed to disappear after a number of hours but disappear before you can get the item sewn if the humidity is high, or they seem to have disappeared and come back permanently if you hit the spot with an iron. There are some that are supposed to disappear when you spray water on them, but if you accidentally touch them with the iron they are also permanent. Some of marks also run and make an awful mess when water hits them.

These pens are really a dream come true. Just don't write something you want to keep or sign a check with them!

As a teacher, I use colored pens all of the time, and now that I have found a smooth-writing, easy-to-erase product that comes in vibrant colors, I will never use other pens again. I will agree with others that these pens go through ink very quickly, but their effectiveness as a writing tool is worth it for me. I have also found that the finer tipped versions use less ink. And though refills are not available everywhere, you can buy them through Japanese import retailers. Pilot also makes a style of this pen with a barrel that feels more like a pencil and with an eraser on the cap; however, they are not refillable.

-- Great color selection.
-- The pens write smoothly without skipping, especially once they're "warmed up."
-- The ink erases thoroughly (and I've never had problems with it tearing paper.
-- There are refills available.

-- The ink is heat sensitive, so it is not recommended for important documents or those that will be exposed to extreme temperatures.
-- The ink runs out fairly quickly, but then again, it actually feels great to use up a pen refill (as opposed to all those partially used pens all over my house and classroom).
-- The pen has a design flaw in that the eraser is on the end of the pen. Since this is where the cap is stored when the pen is being used, the cap has to be removed to access the eraser.

After reading the comments regarding the ink disappearing when exposed to heat, I conducted an experiment. To summarize, if you lose something due to heat exposure, there is a very good chance you can get it back.

My not-so-scientific scientific experiment:
For my experiment I used Frixon Point 04 in purple, blue, pink, and green (darkest color to lightest).
On the left side of the paper, I used a hair dryer to make the ink disappear (happened within seconds).
On the left side of the paper, I erased using the frixion nub.
I then placed the sheet of paper in the freezer.

heat exposed side: Purple came back the best, followed by blue and pink (tie), and green did terrible. Purple looked almost pre-heat-exposure quality while blue and pink were easily readable. Green was visible, but very hard to make out. Conclusion: freezer method works great for dark colors for accidental heat exposure. Light colors did terrible.

nub frixion side: Not so good. If you use the nub and (for some reason) want it back, you will get something from the darker colors, but it will be light. I can just barely make out the light colors, but perhaps a longer freezer exposure will help.

CONCLUSION: if you lose something via accidental heat exposure or frixion nub error, you can likely retrieve it via placing in freezer for a few minutes (though you'll have to squint harder on the lighter colors).

I would also note that once the paper returned to room-temperature after removal from the freezer, the colors DID NOT fade.

I love the pens. I agree with other reviews, that the ink runs out fast and the nub should be at the end of the pen cap. I get annoyed having to remove the cap every time I want to erase.

At first i thought that these pens were the answers to my prayers. A pen that actually erases, superior to a pencil and a normal pen. It does not smudge like pencil but you can erase just as easily.

The problem I ran into is that they run out of ink 4 times faster than a G6. I literally killed 2 of these pens in 2 weeks. Here is the information Pilot sent me concerning the Frixion and other Pilot models.

Here are a few examples of pens and their Write Out distances. Unfortunately I only have this information in "meters" not in feet.

Frixion = 225m

G-6 & G2-7= 1000m

P700= 1400m

PV7= 1250m

EasyTouch M= 600m

as you can see, for the convenience of having a good erasable pen you have to buy 4 Frixions to equal 1 g6..... at 1 pen a week i would have to enter my pen purchasing as a line item on my budget.... and you cant refill them, pilot told me that refills are not authorized for the American market.
