The Invention of Dr. Grip Writing Instruments

Based on a common need for a more comfortable writing instrument, Pilot set out to give people the writing solution they were looking for. In 1995, Pilot launched Dr. Grip, a pen and mechanical pencil collection designed to provide superior writing comfort and be the solution to that demand. By 1996, the entire Dr. Grip line earned the Ease-of-Use Commendation by the Arthritis Foundation. More recently in 2012, a three-month study conducted by the Georgia Tech Research Institute found Dr. Grip Center of Gravity (COG) surpassed key competitors in overall comfort ratings for users both with and without arthritis. In the study, Dr. Grip COG was proven to be almost 2X more comfortable than key competitor brands*.

Dr. Grip is Offered in an Array of Point Types and Barrel Colors

Dr. Grip's classic line has been enhanced over the years with the introduction of a wide variety of barrel colors and styles. The collection includes both fashion-forward and professional styles for a variety of writing needs and occasions. Dr. Grip is available in barrel colors that range from fun neon colors, to sophisticated metallic hues, to professional blue, black, and silver. In addition, Dr. Grip is offered in a variety of point types including Medium 1.0mm ball point ink, Fine 0.7 mm gel ink, and #2 HB mechanical pencil lead. Every Dr. Grip pen and mechanical pencil is retractable and refillable for continued use and lasting value.

Introducing the Dr. Grip 4+1 Multi-function Writing Instrument

The newest addition to the Dr. Grip Collection is a writing instrument that serves as both pen AND pencil. In fact, the Dr. Grip 4+1 is 5 different writing options in one! Designed for getting complex jobs done with incredible precision, the Dr. Grip 4+1 has retractable Black, Blue, Red and Green advanced ink, as well as Mechanical Pencil lead. Dr. Grip 4+1 is perfect for anyone who needs--or just simply enjoys--different writing options for editing, organizing, and more. Dr. Grip is the ultimate all-in-one writing instrument.

I've used Dr. Grip .5mm pencils for over 10 years now. I do a lot of higher mathematics by hand, and have always relied on the great feel of these pencils. The reason is both the "feel" of the pencil, as well as the metal rod insert that is included inside which lets you draw lead out with a shake of the pencil. Sounds petty, but when you are deep in writing, it makes it that much better to just shake and go as I say.

Lately, Target stopped carrying these $10 pencils (which in all honesty, the price tag is justified). So I turned to Amazon for it.

As soon as I got it, I knew something was terribly different. I have a 4 year old Dr. Grip pencil, identical in looks, which I compared to what I just received. The "new" pencil feels very cheap, and the metal rod is no longer included. It says made in Japan, but in all honesty it feels like a cheap Chinese product. The newer pencil is about 1/5 the weight of the older pencil I have.

I am disappointed in Pilot, the maker. However, I asked Amazon for a refund and they took care of me right away. Save your money if you are after the traditional pencil- this isn't it.

I've been hooked on these since the late 90's when I first tried them. I'm an designer and every piece I've created over the last ten years started with my Dr. Grip Pencil. It feels great in my hand and I hate drawing with anything else. My only complaint would be that once the eraser is used up I don't know where to find a replacement that will fit.

I ordered this as a replacement for a lost pencil by the same name. I was disappointed when I received this pencil to find that it is much lighter, almost completely plastic, and does not have the shaking mechanism to extend the lead. It looks much more cheaply made. The older version stood out because it had a nice weight in your hand. This one just seems like most other mechanical pencils.

My favorite pencil as of now. I had one of these back in grade school and I ran across the old one and then ventured out to find a new one.

I found these on amazon hoping it would be the exact same one as the old one, with the shaker feature.

Well, couple days later I received the pencil and was disappointed that it didn't have the shaker feature. Hence the loss of a star.

I did go looking for the one with the shaker feature and did find it as well on amazon, it is charcoal grey and it is a ltd model. So if your looking for a dr grip withe shaker, look elsewhere and find the dr grip ltd.

Besides the lack of the shaker feature(which is a great novelty) on this dr. grip, the pencil handles well and the shaker feature isn't missed as much. Defiantly highly recommended. But like I said, if your looking for the shaker dr grip, this isn't the right one.

I thought I was getting the shaky one but I should have known the price was too good to be true. Decided to keep it anyway because I needed another pencil. I like the feel and grip of it. Skinny pencils tend to give me hand cramps but I can write longer with this one. The tip of the pencil does not retract so you only have to click once or twice to get lead out. The eraser is ridiculously small so be prepared to carry another eraser or scratch out mistakes because it runs out fast. For the price? Normally, It's nice and all but I'm sure there are cheaper options.

Reading reviews I learned there is a "shake to advance the lead" version in addition to the latest counter-balanced/weighted version at office stores. However my favorite is the third option, this pencil, as it is the lightest of the three. I used it throughout school. They tend to last me about 4-5 years of heavy use each. I'm on my forth. Great pencil for engineering and note taking!

This is my favorite mechanical pencil. It writes smooth like a pen and is comfortable to hold. I have had mine for 5 years and it is still in great condition and working great.

This pencil has a comfortable grip. Works well. Best mechanical pencil I have ever used. It's plastic. Don't let the picture fool you into thinking it's metal.
