I am relatively new to calligraphy; I did some in art school, but the majority of my work has been in digital media over the last 15 years. Recently I have become very nostalgic for hand lettering, and after reading several reviews and watching youtube clips I decided I would give the Pilot Parallel a try. I decided to go with the 1.5mm size as it seemed less intimidating to me as a newbie to calligraphy.

Loading the ink was a breeze, and though I haven't had to reload it yet, I don't foresee an issue. The action on the pen is amazing, the ink flows smoothly and consistently, with solid, beautiful lines. I do recommend that you make sure to get good quality paper, my initial tests were on low quality printer paper, which lead to some bleeding.

I do wish that I had gone with one of the larger pens in retrospect though; as much as I love this one, it strikes me as being better for decorative scroll work than actual lettering. That being said, I would highly recommend this pen, and I plan to buy the other 3 sizes very soon!

Pilot provides consumers with a delightful series of calligraphy pens with the Parallel pens. All of the pens in the series have a wonderful shape, weight, and balance in the hand, and write wonderfully with no scratchiness and perfect ink flow. The pen also comes packed with goodies, which look like even more of gift when you consider the low price and the quality and reliability of these products.

This 2.4 mm size version puts down a very nice line that can easily be used as a daily writer by individuals with handwriting that occupies the larger end of the spectrum. These pens are relatively inexpensive compared with other calligraphy pens and are far superior to any other calligraphy pens I've tried (and trust me - I've tried a lot). I'd even pick the Parallel line over Pelikan's (another legendary fountain pen brand which is my favorite pen brand overall) Script series, which are also calligraphy pens, but don't have the advantage of the double plate nib that the Parallels have. This innovative nib is far different to the usual nib. Instead of a single piece of metal, this nib rests two flat metal plates on top of each other (hence the name Parallel) allowing for easy variation between thick and thin lines when writing.

The single drawback - one that is a result of the design of calligraphy pens with this shape - is that the cap cannot be posted on the end of the pen when you take it off to write.

Summary: If you're looking for high quality, low price, and trouble free calligraphy pens that will last, do yourself a favor and pick up some of the Pilot Parallel Pens.

First calligraphy pen. Love using this thing. So satisfying. I'm no artist/calligrapher, but filling in the lines is so satisfying I just had to sketch something comicy. I've only been using the black ink cartridge so far, so I really can't say much yet about refilling / using a converter.

The parallel plates result in a very smooth and steady ink flow. This 6mm width is huge! Very nice for large lettering (2+ inches tall). You'll want one of the smaller width pens for addressing cards, writing notes, etc.

I love this pen! It's one of the best calligraphy pens I've used! The ink is quality, though it does come out quick. You just have to learn your style to the point of writing quickly.

This pen gives exactly what it promises!

I got this pen so I could learn calligraphy for my wedding. Warning, the title says it comes with a red and blue cartridge, but mine were red and black. This pen works very well once you get the ink flowing; which is actually pretty easy unlike some other fountain pens. I love how smooth the nib is, it doesn't scratch the paper at all. I am an avid fountain pen user so there are a few things that I wish were different about this pen:

1. The ability to post the cap on the end of the pen when writing, I hate having to hold the cap or set it down and try to find it again when I am done writing.

2. I wish the "converter" was actually a converter. I hate using cartridges. They are way more expensive than using bottled ink, and they create extra trash.

3. Since I am stuck using the cartridges, why not make them larger? There is this huge barrel, they could have made longer cartridges to fill it up so you wouldn't have to keep replacing them. I can't imagine how quickly you would go through ink on the larger nibbed pens!

Despite these drawbacks, the pen does exactly what it claims to do, and writes smoother than some of my other, non-calligraphy, fountain pens. If you don't know calligraphy at all, I recommend purchasing a book on how to do it as the guide that comes with the pen is not meant to teach you.

This is meant for Calligraphy but I tell you I use it for regular writing! And I love the way this square Nib shows my writing. The only negative thing to this is that the big Nib uses Ink quickly.

These pens are the best! Using all the sizes and mixing colors are simply lots of fun. I have ordered several so that I can have different colors with the same nibs. They are lots of fun!

I've read a complaint about the ink drying time, but the black ink (separately purchased) dries very quickly, is smudge-proof, and a very nice flat black. The nib is easy to adjust to, and stays clean after placing the cap back on. In my opinion, they should chop off the last inch and a half from the rear of the pen, since it has no functional benefit and takes up space. This is going to become my favorite sketching tool.

I've purchased several brands of calligraphy pens, none are as smooth or easy to use as this one is. I accidentally left it on it's side and it did NOT dry up. I love this calligraphy pen and plan to buy other sizes as well.
