I'm an artist, and I use many kinds of inking pens to stylize my comic work. At a family member's house, I found a few of these and decided to test them out.

As my title said, simply writing didn't do justice for this pen. The rolling ball guarantees no stickiness, the ink being luciously gel-like and practically being one with the paper, it is so smooth and slick.

Even better is that I have never had this kind of pen leak or run, emphasizing what a high-quality tool it is. And a personal thing I find attractive is that the ink is pitch black, no faint hues whatsoever. That's just me, of course.

For artists out there, this is a good idea for drawing (reasons above and) because it has a wonderfully rounded tip, so you never need to worry about the point bending or breaking. And you still get a fine line!

Whether you are a writer, artist, or both, this is the pen I would suggest for anyone. It's a dream in a writing utensil, simply put.

The Pilot V5's are the best pen out on the market. They write very smoothly without any effort. This multi pack gives you many colors to enjoy and are great for grading/correcting any papers. They are also great for any kind of doodling. These are my pens of choice and they come to you highly recommended.

I've been using this model pen for over 15 years. I started using this pen when I was in the military, where my job required me to transcribe live, foreign language radio transmissions. My colleagues and I tried many different brands and models of pens, and for me this pen offered the best performance. When speed is essential you learn to write small and the Extra Fine point is perfect. Over the years I've noticed some problems with this pen, but nothing bad enough to make me choose another pen. After beginning to use a new pen, if you leave it tip up for a long time (several months) it stops working. Also, it is necessary to use a lighter touch with this pen. If you press too hard the tip will bend and if it bends too much the pen will be useless, so using this pen in a rough environment, i.e. trying to write while in a vehicle that is driving off-road, is not recommended.

I still keep my eye out and try new pens every so often, but I keep coming back to the Pilot Precise V5 Extra Fine Point.

I bought these pens hoping that the thin point would be compatible with my vintage Spirograph and they worked perfectly. (Ball point pen tips had a narrower profile in the late 60's when the toy was invented, not all modern pens will fit through the holes.) I was worried that the liquid ink might smudge, but it wasn't a problem. Excellent pens.

Depending on the pen's intended purpose--writing general notes and memos, quick sketching, inking final art projects, addressing mail, or lettering invitations, etc.--satisfaction can vary widely. So, I'll look at this pen from various angles: comfort, ink quality, longevity, and nib sizing.

COMFORT:
The girth is similar to that of your standard BIC stick pen, but is smooth (i.e. no ridges, notches, latex, etc.) and there is a good distance from the grip to the nib. I personally didn't enjoy writing with this pen for extended periods because it was difficult to find a comfortable writing position, however, jotting quick notes and such was fine.

INK QUALITY:
This pen lays down a buttery smooth deep black line. That said, it's unforgiving on generic/cheap office or notebook paper, and won't hesitate to cop an attitude when it comes to finer writing papers (such as Rhodia vellum, which is designed for use with fountain pens). By that I mean this ink feathers and bleeds.

On the cheap papers it bleeds like a hemophiliac, whereas on the premium papers it bleeds only as if it just scraped its knee (trickles and dots here and there). Plus, on the premium quality papers, it will require a few seconds to dry. That means lefties need to be careful.

And finally, while I would use this to sign checks or important documents, I wouldn't do so with the utmost confidence considering that it feathers with both water and alcohol (see comment for link to a writing sample image).

LONGEVITY:
This is a checkmark in its favour because this pen will last a while. For a liquid ink pen, I assumed it would be dead in under 20 pages, but was pleasantly surprised you can get 30-40 pages from a single barrel. (Writing top to bottom on college ruled paper.

I LOVE these pens.

I've used red ones every day work for almost 2 years, and blue ones for over 3. I have everyone I work with hooked on them.

They write smoothly, and easily (important for me - I have carpal tunnel syndrome), and the smaller barrel is a great factor.

They will write on almost any kind of paper, even tissue-thin self-carboning paper.

They rarely skip, and won't clog or dry out, even if you leave the cap off all day.

I prefer the V7 to the V5, but the V7 doesn't come in all the same colors, so I have both.

I use up at least 1 V7 red pen every 4 weeks or so. The colors stay bright even 4 weeks after I write on something.
