Editorial Reviews

2010 release from New Orleans native, Shante Franklin, also known as acclaimed indie rapper Curren$y. He has evolved and perfected his lyrical delivery into a very unique sound. With his own personal swagger and quick-witted lyrics, he is redefining the essence of what it means to be a southern rapper. As an artist he has built a brand by relentlessly releasing mix tapes, such as "This Ain't No Mixtape" in 2009, and attacking the internet with creative tenacity and conviction for his music. Curren$y has recorded with acclaimed artists such as Lil' Wayne, The Black Keys, The Disco Biscuits, Wiz Khalifa, The Cool Kids, and Mos Def.

It's the only album where after listening to the previews I was actually intrigued.

Other reviewers have already covered most of the strong points of this excellent album, but have omitted one critical highlight - the best hook of the year:
"Michael Knight, Michael Knight Michael Knight
Michael Knight, Michael Knight Michael Knight
Michael Knight, sku-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du"
Genius!
Seriously though, Pilot Talk & Pilot Talk II are rap essentials of 2010.
I give this CD 4.5 out of 5 stars, and sku-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du-du rounds it up to 5.
Curren$y & Ski Beatz bring the flavor like a musical Ben & Jerry. Have a taste.

It was kind of weird because I was still digesting the first Pilot Talk when Pilot Talk 2 got its release date. With the date coming so close to the other release, I figured it would inevitably be pushed back and delayed many times. However, as the release date neared, artwork popped up and tracklisting became available it was clear that Curren$y was wasting no time between releases. Determined as well since his release week starred many other releases such as Kanye West, Nicki Minaj & Lloyd Banks amongst others. Quite the task, but the JETS will fly regardless.

Curren$y is the definition of skill. His thoughts may seem random but all come together perfectly to make sense. He reminds me of the Wu-Tang Clan in their prime (specifically Raekwon & Ghostface Killah) with different subject matter. Sometimes you wonder what in the world he's talking about but then he manages to tie a line to a previous line and often times it takes multiple listens to notice the little nuances and connections he seems to make on every song. This, along with excellent organic production, gives his albums great replay value. His producers perfectly complement his style as they rework sample based tracks since they "don't clear samples at this label". Each song is done with a band and gives the tracks a life of their own.

As his second album this year, there's no fall off and he's clearly in a good zone right now. It shows a progression from his last album but yet is an obvious continuation. However, this album takes on its own sound and identity. From the unique artwork to the contrast in color (green & purple...roll it up) it's clear that care was put into this album even though it comes literally a few months after the first Pilot Talk.

I had never heard this cd before buying it, but I was confident knowing it was a Curren$y album. It is one of those albums you can leave on repeat without messing with what track its on, and every song is memorable and fun to listen to everytime.

In the second album of the Pilot Talk series, Curren$y showcases his skills even further. Unlike his first album, which had a number of guest appearances from big name rappers like Snoop Dog, Devin the Dude, and Mos Def, this one primarily features just a few people from his crew. The exception being the final track where Raekwon makes an appearance. Curren$y's style is very laid back but confident. He manages to enunciate well but still sound like he doesn't have a care in the world. He mainly raps about smoking, women, and how amazing his life is. Cliché as it may seem in the rap genre, he is very creative in how he goes about rapping about these things. He uses lots of poetic elements that invoke a nice sense of imagery and listening to him rhyme about how good things are makes me feel good too. The production he is backed with is amazing. It contains lots of jazz, funk and soulful instrumentals. This all together provides for a consistent album start to finish. I never have the slightest inclination to skip a track when I listen to it.

2010 was a very big year in hip-hop; Big Boi, Kanye West, Black Sheep, Black Milk, Shad, Panacea, The Roots all put out amazing albums and that's just to name a few. However, among all those Pilot Talk II is easily my favorite rap album of 2010.

Very few MCs(are they called that anymore?) and music production mesh so well as with this. This is just really good music and I haven't heard Hip Hop in a while.
This brotha has a certain swag and delivery that is if nothing else, refreshing. I listen to it completely without a skip. A double treat when you have decide to listen to either the bars or the exceptional soundtrack, both are equally outstanding. Don't download this, do the art justice and purchase the CD, it sounds better than an MP3 anyway. I think i'll buy a couple copies as gifts. ONE.

Curren$y comes through again with a fantastic album! I didn't think he could top Pilot Talk 1 but Pilot Talk 2 is another 5 Star effort. Ski Beatz and Monster Beatz laced this joint from start to finish. I don't know how else to put it, this is just really GOOD music. I bought 4 copies and am giving the other 3 away as Christmas gifts. JETS!
