A fine pen, but little better than a Sharpie,

This review is from: Pilot Varsity Disposable Fountain Pen, Black Ink (90015) (Office Product)
When I bought this on a whim, I naively assumed it would be capable of old-fashioned script with variations in line width like all my prior fountain pens. The idea was to have a nice pen for signatures on stationary. Nope. The tip is shaped like a ball. The only difference relative to a ball point is the type of ink and the feed system, and the former isn't an improvement. The ink smears on cardstock, dries slowly, and bleeds on cheap paper. The pen stroke is functionally identical to an Ultra Fine Point Sharpie, except the Sharpies are 1/3 the price, and their ink dries faster and doesn't bleed. Ball-point print is slightly lighter weight than this fountain pen. Neither looks especially stylish. To the Pilot's credit, it writes smoothly and encourages you to use physical flourishes that others don't. So, yes, it's a fine pen. It works, messy ink aside. But is it unique enough to be worth $4? Unless I've missed some significant, no, certainly not. It's no surprise in retrospect that none of the office supply chain stores I visited had one in stock.

I am a bit of a pen nut, I use them frequently in writing in moleskine notebooks. I burn through a standard ballpoint in about 2 weeks.I love fountain pens, but they are generally expensive to refill, messy, and expensive if lost. Queue these pens. All the best qualities of a fountain pen, none of the expense and worry. I buy them by the box and use them for nearly everything now. If you like using a fountain pen, and want to be able to use them everywhere, this is your pen.

This pen does a great job for what it is -- a disposable fountain pen. The stroke is wider than I expected, so it isn't as functional for writing as I had hoped, but it's surprisingly comfortable, and it's been useful in writing a large quantity of wedding thank-you notes.
