I've read the books and fell head first into the characters and the world that L.J. Smith created, so I had certain expectations of this show. In seeing all the promotion and reading all the tidbits about the show and the cast before the show aired I set myself up to be disappointed. But I thought, 'Why not, it's free'. I have to admit that once I hit the play button and the show started, I was caught up in the world created for TV. Sure there are differences from the book, but you don't get caught up in that at all. I was instantly swept into the world of Mystic Falls and carried away by the actors portrayals of their characters...I really and truly have become a fan of The Vampire Diaries TV series and it all happened by watching this pilot episode. Thanks Amazon!

For a cast of somewhat unknowns, the acting and direction is good. The cinematography has a nice look and the show doesn't appear low budget at all. While the books are based what is classified as a young adult series, I think this tries to expand the demographics. So far so good, I would say check it out, heck amazon it letting people watch it for free for now.

LOVE it! And I'm talking from the point of view of someone who does not like vampire shows or movies! New actors (I don't care how old they really are - they do a great job!), new plot (not that old-fashion vampire "scared of the cross, diabolical figure"), and hot guys and gals! My whole neighborhood and family watch it. I'm a science fiction lover, and the show """"""Supernatural""""""""""is my favorite, but The Vampire Diaries are now my second favorite!!! I have seen the actors off stage and they make a great team.

This show was recommended to me by a friend as I am a huge fan of both Twilight and True Blood. Vampire Diaries strikes the perfect balance and I was surprised at how fresh the show was since the whole vampire trend is becoming very overdone. Where the characters in Twilight are shallow, Vampire Diaries has much more depth to both the characters and storyline in general. True Blood can have too much gore and nudity for my taste at times, which this show does not. I can watch it with my family and not have to worry about it being too inappropriate. This show has the best combination sexiness and depth. Compared to most other shows aimed at young adults, this is one that you will actually enjoy watching.

Just finished watching the pilot and overall, I liked it. I think it's a show I can really get into. The look of the show is great. It's what you would expect from a vampire show with the deep colors, especially red and people wearing a lot of black.
It's hard to comment on the story yet. But it seems like it could get very deep. Each character seems to have a lot of issues to deal with on top of the every day high school stuff, and there is already plenty of conflict between a lot of the characters. Conflict between Good Brother and Evil Brother, one girl gets jealous of another and has to deal with it, and brother and sister have to cope with the loss of their parents, relationship issues...it's all here, but now with dak vampire storylines mixed in.
I'd say this show would very highly appeal to teenagers but can be enjoyed by anyone.
I also love the classic CW formula of playing great music in the show to deepen the emotional experience and to add to the insight of the characters.
I'm looking forward to seeing how the story will play out. I don't have any overall expectations or comparisons to make because I have not ever seen any of the Twilight movies or read the books and the same goes for the True Blood series as well. So, I have nothing to compare this too.
I'll update my review when I get through a few more episodes.

Just bought season 1 and 2 to get caught up to current episodes and this show is great! The plots are unpredictable, which is so refreshing! The story lines and acting are soooo much better than Twilight.

Let's me be honest here... I watched this series initially because of the fact there's some MAJOR eye candy. Yes, when it comes to Ian Somerhalder, I am amazingly shallow.
That said... I tried reading the book series by the same name years earlier and I wasn't really into it so I cannot comment on the transition from book to TV show. I will say however that these actors and actresses can act. In addition, the plot is very interesting to me (a 30-something year old woman), even if it's geared toward a younger audience.
If you enjoy shows like Supernatural, I think you'll like Vampire Diaries.

I thought this show would be just another vampire story like twilight but I'm happy to say that I was wrong. It is so much better than twilight! The story line is better and it's got a lot more action in it. The characters are perfect. Damon is is probably my favorite and I think most others would agree. He's the icing on the cake. I can actually say this is the best show I have watched in a long time and people of all ages would enjoy it.

This is hands down my favorite show on right now. The characters are great, the plot twists are great, and the actors do a really good job. This TV series is loosly based on the books by the same name written in the early 90's by LJ Smith.
The TV series really isn't like the original books, the characters look different, some are left out and some are changed (last names, background stories, ect.). The TV show resembles Stefan's Diaries by LJ Smith more because that book series is being written as the TV show is being aired.
