5.0 out of 5 stars Fun show with great characters, November 1, 2009
By
This review is from: White Collar Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
To begin with, I'm not much of a fan of procedural type shows where cops solve cases episode by episode. White Collar kind of has that going on, but it does it EXTREMELY well. And I will tell you why!

1. GREAT actors. They're pretty awesome. Matthew Bomer and Tim DeKay are quite talented and make the characters of Neal and Peter very likable. All of the subtle things that Peter portrays on screen make him a cop you want to root for. They could easily be a pair of guys who bumble and fumble through cases and grate on each others (as well as our) nerves, but they have fantastic chemistry which makes the show both interesting and fun. Even Tiffani Thiessen (formerly known as Kelly Kapowski) does a great job of being the loving wife.

2. GREAT writing. The overall story is about Neal, a white collar criminal helping out FBI agent Peter solve cases in exchange for semi-freedom. Neal's deal is trying to find out what happened to his girlfriend while he was in jail. Sounds boring? The writers make sure that it's not. The week to week crime solving is also pretty good so far. As I said before, I don't like procedurals but I have been really liking White Collar so far.

If anything, give at least the pilot a watch. The characters could very easily be stereotypical and irritating and who knows what else, but fortunately they're fresh and fun.

This is an awesome show - it's a modern "It takes a theif" for today's audience. Don't miss out on this one! Good acting and a fun plot; it contains something for everyone. It seems to be of much higher quality than the networks can manage... As a fan of everything from FlashForward to Fringe this is a fantastic addition if you want to avoid the full scale copies including yet another CSI, Bones, SVU and everything else "rehashed" a thousand times. I am in a wait-and-see mode as new ideas like "Amsterdam" have been dying on the vine lately, and the new flurry of Sitcoms are less funny than old reruns (I guess all the writers died during the reality era).

4.0 out of 5 stars Con man meets FBI agent in this wonderful series, November 1, 2010
By
This review is from: White Collar Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
USA knows how to do summer television right. With hits like Psych and Burn Notice, it's difficult for the network to do any wrong. After tackling different sides of the law, USA decided to take on the unique and fascinating world of white-collar crime in their exciting new comedy police procedural White Collar.

In White Collar viewers meet con man Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer), a sophisticated white-collar thief who has finally been put behind bars by his archnemesis CIA Special Agent Peter Burke (Tim DeKay), an agent in the white-collar crime division. Just months before his parole comes up, Neal escapes from prison to track down his ex-girlfriend, Kate (Alexandra Daddario). Peter hunts him down, but finds that Neal may be helpful when it comes to solving white-collar crimes. After solving their first case together, Neal joins up with the CIA as a consultant and works with Peter to fight white-collar criminals.

The centerpiece of the series is the hilarious relationship between Neal and Peter and the way they play off one another - basically bickering like an old married couple. Though I admit this relationship feel somewhat strained in a few episodes, it cleans up as the show goes on and the actors become more comfortable with the characters. Aside from Neal and Peter, the eccentric, quirky Mozzie (Willie Garson) constantly battles the pair for attention on scene and, honestly, occasionally wins. Garson's whimsical delivery and throughly developed character is one of the highlights of the show, and it'll be interesting to see how he continues to develop. Of course, you can't forget 90210 alum Tiffani Theissen as Peter's wife Elizabeth. Though she seems weak aside from some of the other characters, she's not the typical TV CIA wife and grows into her own lively character as the season goes on.

Unlike the popular prime-time franchise CSI, White Collar focuses on sophisticated, high-end crimes such as art theft, forgery, fraud and embezzlement rather than violent crimes of passion. This allows for a fresh type of feel to police procedurals, rather than chasing criminals around New York or LA after discovering a murder, Neal and Peter put their heads together to unravel complex, sophisticated crimes that take a few more brain cells than the average murder.

White Collar is another wonderful series from USA that breathes a refreshing summer breeze into some exciting television. If you haven't see the first season, you should pick it up before diving into season two, or else you'll miss some important plot points. Don't let this white-hot summer series pass you by.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive great show, November 26, 2009
This review is from: White Collar Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
The show is entertaining and addictive. The interaction of the characters is what makes this show a must see. The two lead characters work together to solve white collar crimes, one is FBI, the other is former (or maybe still practicing) criminal on a work release. There is a light touch of comedy in their communications with each other. They both work well together and are learning the perspective of the 'other side' from each other as they solve the crime. Both characters have appeal. Neal easily stretches the rules to get what he wants, Peter goes by the rules. But you can see Peter working on Neal to keep things legal, and Neal's pushing Peter towards the boundary edge of the rules. Peter is likable, very clever, by the book, knows a lot about Neal and is good at figuring out what Neal is up to. Neal is clever and has his own agenda that he conceals from Peter (or does he?), which is part of a story arc mystery for the first season. These two, Neal and Peter, respect each other, and work as partners, but the game is on between them. You are also treated to gorgeous shots of New York that make a beautiful backdrop when these guys go outside. I watched the first five episodes so far (and rewatched the episodes too) and look forward to the next ones because its that good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reminds me of early CHUCK, October 30, 2009

White Collar is a frothy, funny, fun to look at show in the manner of Psych, Chuck and Burn Notice, my favorite shows on now. Both leads are excellent - showing there is more to them than expected - and the dialogue is very good. Like C, P and BN, you have to have a strong suspension of disbelief - plot holes abound - but it is fun to watch the interaction of the leads. If we're lucky, they will develop the characters in a way where we really care about them (like in Chuck and to a lesser extent, Burn Notice). Since we have OTA TiVO, I have to watch them either online, or via Amazon - even with the per show fees, it is cheaper to buy ala carte than pay $50-$80 per month for HD cable or satellite. Video on Demand ROCKS!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Not Miss Addition to Weekly TV Viewing, February 16, 2012
This review is from: White Collar Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
Ok, so I'm a little late discovering this show, but I just finished season 1 and LOVED it. Commercial, but not to the extent that it's cheesy. Great, likeable characters with fresh twists and the scripts are totally engaging. Off to watch season 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars White Collar, November 1, 2009
This review is from: White Collar Season 1 (Amazon Instant Video)
I watched the premier on TV and loved it. My husband did also and he's hard to please. I watched it again on the PC and I want more. This is a very viable show with great actors that are well typed cast, the sets are excellent, and the stories great. I will be looking forward to many more seasons of this.
