5.0 out of 5 stars THE R/C book to read!, July 6, 2000

This review is from: R/C Pilot's Handbook: Basic to Advanced Flying Techniques from the Pros: Basic to Advanced Flying Techniques from the Pros (Paperback)
Excellent material. I was into R/C several years ago and was looking for a refresher. This book has it all from basic flying skills (takeoffs and landings) to intermediate skills (dreaded cross winds takeoffs and landings). It also mentions the differences in flying trike gear or tail gear and how to do both effectively and prevent crashes. Multi engines, pylon racing, acrobatics, scale, engine performance are all covered. Gliders and Ducted fan are also covered. Most complete book R/C book I have come accross. Highly recommended for those thinking about R/C, new R/C pilots and those requiring a refresher.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not 5 stars either, February 12, 2003

I don't usually write reviews, but I'm gonna have to go against the crowd on this one. I bought this book based on the 5 star reviews and was a little disappointed. Its not a bad book, but most of it is a collection of articles about different types of flying, like combat, sail planes, scales, etc. There's a little info on basic flying and some very limited info on some basic aerobatics, and that's it.

If you're getting started in R/C and looking for some good basic flight instruction, plus some other useful tips, I MUCH preferred "Getting Started in Radio Control Airplanes" by Yarrish. It has as much flight instruction as this one, plus some useful info on model building, covering, etc.

This review is from: R/C Pilot's Handbook: Basic to Advanced Flying Techniques from the Pros: Basic to Advanced Flying Techniques from the Pros (Paperback)
This book is a series of articles from Model Airplane News and, as such, is somewhat disjointed at best. I agree with the previous reviewer that "Getting Started with Radio Control Airplanes" is a better book for the novice. However, I've recently discovered another (and much newer) book that's even better. It's called "Mastering Radio Controlled Flight" by Scott Stoops.

Stoops is a full-scale commercial pilot, a sport/stunt pilot, and a radio control pilot. His explanations are clear, in just the right sequence, and well illustrated throughout. There's a lot of "how to" for the basic, intermediate, and advanced radio control pilot. He even goes into some of the newer developments in electric-powered flight, much of which has changed radically in just the past 18 months with the introduction of lithium-polymer batteries.

I'm at the advanced trainer stage, just getting comfortable with aerobatics, and found this book invaluable.

I'm not sure why Amazon doesn't carry it. It's available through the publisher (Kiona Publishing).
