Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Without the 1998 cult horror film by the same name, this 1981 psychodrama may have slid off the map entirely—a crime, considering just how terrifically upsetting it is. Leon and Ursula are teenagers living alone in a mansion after the death of their wealthy parents. Well, not entirely alone. They are joined by Pin, the full-sized, translucent medical dummy with which their physician father amused patients by throwing his voice. (This is the point where, if you’re the nervous type, you slowly back away from the book.) As children, Leon and Ursula treated Pin as a confidant, though now that they’re older, it’s only Leon who holds entire two-sided conversations with him while Ursula plays along. It’s a bizarre stasis indeed, but everybody is happy—until the day Ursula brings home a boyfriend who has a damning diagnosis of Leon: “He’s as loony as can be.” With the family trio threatened, Leon and Pin hatch a plan—it involves hypodermic needles—to rid themselves of this new bother. Yes, it’s a heck of a plot synopsis, though it can’t convey Leon’s calm, aristocratic first-person narration, nor does it touch upon the queasy, incestual relationship that turns the siblings’ every interaction into the kind of barely hidden perversity V. C. Andrews would had loved. (Neiderman, in fact, became Andrews’ ghostwriter after her death.) If you’re a fan of clever psychos or medical horrors—or if you’re just an all-around sicko—I’d like to introduce you to your new best friend. --Daniel Kraus

I am thrilled that Amazon was able to locate a copy of this novel for me within their network! I saw the movie on video years ago and thought it was quite good, but the movie couldn't even begin to compare with the novel! I would recommend this book to anyone. Every page makes you want to read on and on. I was actually dissappointed when I finished, which I have to admit, I just received the book yesterday and finished it last night. I'm sure I'll wait a couple of months and read it again.
This book was a real psychological thriller with surprises around every corner. A brother and sister like none I've ever read about before! Neiderman takes his readers into the deepest, darkest depths of the human mind where true inner madness hides behind secret passions.
Very suspensful! I highly suggest this book gets republished and put back on the shelves for the readers of today to experience Neiderman at his best!

Andrew Neiderman is one of the worlds highest selling authors, mainly through his work as a ghostwriter after the passing of VC Andrews in 1986. His novels can often be a hit or miss affair. Fortunately, PIN is a hit, rather than a miss. PIN tells the story of Ursula and Leon, a pair of orphaned teenagers. Ursula is a sweet young woman who does her best to accommodate her mentally unstable older brother and his fascination with PIN, a mannequin from their father's doctors surgery. When Ursula falls in love, Leon and PIN know that they must take action, or risk seeing their family torn apart.

Overall, PIN was decently written and offered just enough suspense to keep me turning the pages. Recommended for anyone who wants to read a good old fashioned mass market horror novel that doesn't rely on sassy characters, technology or glitter.

Generally, the cover writeup goes: Young Leon and Ursula had little except each other and pin...Mother was driven by a psychotic need to clean. Fahter was consumed by his medical practice. But he understood the sensual hunger growing inside his children's young bodies. He knew they could help each other answer, "The Need." Father had Science and Reason, and he had Pin.

Pin who answered all the children's questions in a voice like father--a clever trick, a brilliant illusion.
But then Mother and Father died in an accident, leaving just the three: Quiet Leon, beautiful and frightened Ursula, and wise, impacable Pin. God help anyone who threatened their perfect trinity. And God help anyone who didn't believe in Pin."

I am glad this book was reissued. I had not read it for some years. I had forgotten how gripping it is.

Wow! The entire family is mad! Nuts! Father is cold and distant, Mother is a clean-freak, Leon is obsessed by Pin, and Ursula (love that name!) cannot stay away from her crazy brother, even though it seems like sometimes she tries to. She even tries to have a normal life and becomes engaged to Stan which ends in disaster.

Neiderman is a master at gripping suspense and horror. It is no wonder that he has been so popular for so many years. I always look forward to each and every release from him - even if it is a reissue of one of his older books. I also look forward to every one of his V. C. Andrews books.

Yes, a master for sure!

The book's ending is a lot better then the old movie's ending, and the story is different in other ways too.

I read this book at a very fast pace hoping that I would get to some type of understanding. It never came. Even the epilogue made no sense. I usually find something good in any book but this one proves to be the exception to the rule. I hope no one else loses time and money on this mish-mash of a book.

I have never seen the movie (I want to watch it though), but I read the book in 2 days. It was very good. It had you turning against the narrator. I liked that. It had you wondering about him. This book makes you believe in something, but then has you wondering later. I loved it.
