3.0 out of 5 stars Underwood Under-performing, August 22, 2007
This review is from: A pinch of snuff (Hardcover)
Michael Underwood's "A Pinch Of Snuff" deals with four insitutions in London: a gentlemen's club, the police, the law courts, and a group of anarchists. Each of these four has its own rigid set of rules and protocols.

The plot is just so-so, but the characters are pretty good. A young man named Brian Tanner is the center of everything but never initiates the action. He is like the ball in a pinball machine getting bounced around by each of the four institutions. Brian is neither stupid nor naive; he knows what is happening to him, but he is helpless to do anything about it.

I don't want to reveal the plot, but I have to mention one scene in the courtroom where Brian's barrister is cross-examining a key witness for the prosecution. It's like a spoof -- every cliche from every TV courtroom drama is present. Michael Underwood can do much better.
