The biggest problem with Pineapple Express is that you sit there and experience one misssed joke after another. In addition to that, the majority of the storyline segments feel like a complete waste of time. The storyline ITSELF feels like filler. That's a sign of a bad movie.

Truth be told, there were moments in this film where I died of uncontrollable laughter. I mean, Seth Rogen is hilarious, and James Franco is really transforming into an actor I get excited about watching. What happened there? There was a time when I would intentionally avoid movies starring that guy. I must say, he's surprised me. This film is a little unevenly crafted, but the end result is not anything to be ashamed of. It basically follows some stoner idiots as they run from a corrupt police officer and a drug dealer who they happened to witness kill some guy. The film bounces along nicely, remaining forgivably unbelievable. The ending, for me, was a mess and that whole action sequence overload killed a little of the films `fun factor', but the ending diner sequence was a laugh riot so I forgave it. James Franco owns this movie, playing a mindless stoner to perfection with the right amount of overplayed tenderness to make his character a pure standout. Not much else to say here. I'd watch it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funniest Movie I've Seen In A Long Time, December 5, 2008
Saw this movie in the theater, and it was funny the whole way through. In my opinion, it wasn't like a normal pot movie, where people that don't smoke wouldn't enjoy it, it is funny for pretty much anyone. It's stupid funny sometimes, dark humor other times, smart and stupid, action and drama (a little bit), but all around hilarious. I laughed so hard I cried, and I felt it for days after--quite the ab workout! Definitely worth the money!

Pineapple Express is a funny movie for anybody and it doesn't only apply to people who smoke marijuana. START RANT: I don't understand a few of the one star reviews. I guess some people are too narrow minded to enjoy something that doesn't fit their mold. Especially the individual complaining about gun violence. Give me a break... it is a movie and I guess he/she would have liked it better if the DRUG CARTEL pulled a apple fritter on people instead of a gun END RANT: It's a good movie and if you go in with an open mind you'll laugh and enjoy it.

2.0 out of 5 stars There are lots of guns., July 14, 2010
By
I just thought I'd take a look at some of the reviews here, after having watched the movie, and the review seem to focus on the "comedy" aspect of this movie. Also, the only quote featured on the packaging is from Rolling Stone, which says "Hardcore hilarious. It slaps a big, fat, goofy smile on your face." I just wanted to add, though, that there is a LOT of gunplay and violence in this movie... i.e., we, along with Rogen's misanthropic process server, witness someone being shot in the head and we see the blood spatter as well. There are fist fight sequences, car chases with guns blasting, people being shot at close range, a piece of Rogen's ear gets blown off, we see the bloody close-up, and much more. If that matters to you.

Apparently there are a lot of tokers who love this kind of Tarantino-esque stuff along with their pot-themed Apatow comedy, but it mostly just didn't work for me. There are definitely some hilarious moments in this film, but the comedy/violence hybrid falls flat, and it's nearly impossible to endure two hours of seth rogen's bearish voice repeatedly screaming "aaaaugh!!" and other things throughout the many action parts of the movie. High marks, though, for James Franco's performance, bring some nuance to a pot dealer, to Danny McBride's bizarre distributor Red, and to Ed Begley Jr's cameo. 2-1/2 stars for the good parts!

The biggest problem with Pineapple Express is that you sit there and experience one misssed joke after another. In addition to that, the majority of the storyline segments feel like a complete waste of time. The storyline ITSELF feels like filler. That's a sign of a bad movie.

Perhaps yet another problem is that, on a personal note, I'm not too crazy about Seth Rogen as an actor. He never really does anything particularly funny- it's more like the characters around him provide the laughs, so the humor is supposed to come from how Seth responds to said characters. Someone completely different from him would be Jim Carrey- Carrey provides the humor himself.

Anyway, Pineapple Express is mediocre for the majority of its running time. It's about Seth's character who witnesses a murder while sitting in a parked car. The murderers spot Seth Rogen before he drives away in a hurry, and eventually Seth and the murderers come into contact with each other. It's a comedy film though. Not a particularly funny one, but hey, that's the category it falls under.

Despite being a comedy, it's interesting how the film has its share of graphic scenes pertaining to blood and shootings, and yet, the violent scenes aren't treated as comedy. So the film has an extremely small portion of suspense as well.

My favorite scene is *definitely* the one where Seth Rogen walks into his girlfriends parents home while the family is sitting at the dinner table. He's covered in sweat and blood and tries to explain to them that a murderer is following him and that they must leave right away.

This is apparently Seth's first time meeting the parents of his girlfriend. What an introduction! There's quite a bit of humor involved during this part, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Proof that even a mediocre movie can make me laugh at times.

Also the friend who bakes cakes for his dead cat provided a few solid laughs as well. The entire conclusion of the storyline where all the bad guys and Seth's friends are battling each other is really exciting to watch as well.

It's just amazing how pointless the majority of the storytelling is though. A good portion of it focuses on nothing but Seth's friends sitting around and smoking weed and saying the worst jokes imaginable. This isn't entertaining not even a *little* bit.

Overall, an average film. You've been warned what to expect, but hey, you've probably seen Seth Rogen before so I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hysterical!, June 9, 2010

The movie was so good it's hard to fault the Blu Ray's lack of content (not horribly lacking, but could have been better) or the slow loading time (that is horrible, but that's Blu Rays in general and not just this one).

So, since I got this for less than $10 shipped, I can honestly say that it was worth every penny. This movie is absolutely hysterical, so even for a few more dollars it's still a 3 or 4 * purchase.

Enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Half laughs and half boredom, February 3, 2010
"Pineapple Express", if you're wondering, is a "brand" of marijuana sold in this movie and the signature element that sets off a war between two drug cartels...into which actor Seth Brogan stumbles by way of witnessing a murder -- when high from Pineapple Express.

If this made you chuckle, you're probably going to like this movie. I last saw Brogan in the miraculous Knocked Up Knocked Up (Unrated Full Screen Edition), one of the funnier films I've seen in recent years. This one is funny, too, but it is also wearisome and dull when visceral comedy isn't creating laughs.

Brogan and his pot-dealing buddy (James Franco) have to outwit (perhaps a poor choice of words) a couple contract killers in this movie after the former witnesses the murder. This takes them from the comfort of their bong-driven life to life in transit, even though they never get far from home.

The humor in this movie is all slapstick. In one memorable scene, the two heroes visit a "friend" who intentionally attacks them in his home and a three-way fight breaks out. The homebody hides in the bathroom and Brogran and bud break down the door, knocking the other guy into the sink which is dislodged from the wall. It's a lot funnier watching and hearing the action than what I can describe, and there are a half-dozen scenes almost as good throughout the movie. Take these scenes away, though, and you have a really stupid and dull late adolescent movie.

Good comedies are hard to come by and, while I wouldn't call this a good one, it is laugh out loud funny at least a half-dozen times, often for 3-4 minutes at a time, and the action keeps moving so you're not bored with a flat story. "Pineapple Express" isn't the last word in anything but, when it's all said and done, people are going to remember it as another funny movie from Brogan.

3.0 out of 5 stars some laugh out loud scenes..., December 31, 2009
but mostly just an average comedy. It kind of reminds me of Dumb and Dumber where the idiots are always a step ahead of the criminals, purely by luck. James Franco is hilarious as Saul, the stoner dealer, and Nora Dunn makes a brief appearance as the mother of Dale's girlfriend. I rented it but it's not really a movie I could watch over and over.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than what I expect!!, November 29, 2009

At first, I don't really like the idea of this movie and looks kinda silly in the previews but waaooww... was I wrong! This movie rocks!! Despite of the dark idea about weed stoner and tons of foul languages, the comedies and the actions in this movie is superb and the actors are doing their jobs very well, as the bad guy, bad cop, "good" bad guy (James Franco is brilliant in this movie, you'll be totally surprised if you have only seen him in Spiderman series ;p ). There's even a little good moral in this movie about friendship and loyalty and ...... mmm.. I think that's about it. But c'mon, it's suppossed to be a comedy for above 17 anyway, raunchy, foul, crazy, sick, very funny and a little bit dark, but it's a great comedy from the Apatow group, much better than 40 Year Old Virgin and Observe and Report, very close to Knocked Up.
