Book Description

January 24, 2012

Miami has always set the weirdness bar, but Serge Storms is back in action and ready to pole vault over it.

First, there’s the media frenzy over the “Hollow Man,” a gutless corpse found on the beach. And yet people think it’s perfectly normal to find dead sharks in the middle of downtown boulevards—or to spot black mushroom clouds behind the airport. Then there are the roving bands of carjackers who suddenly find themselves inconvenienced. Not to mention people lurking outside sex-addiction meetings.

Could this be the work of Serge, that eccentric trivialista and one-man vigilante? And why is he extensively photographing foreign consulates right before the critically important Summit of the Americas comes to town? Does it have something to do with Serge’s declaration to tell his ever-stoned sidekick, Coleman, that he’s decided to become a spy? Of course he’s not working for anyone yet, so Serge is content to just spy for himself until he shows up on radar and his talents are appreciated. His ace in the hole? Serge’s newly revamped Secret Master Plan! His spider senses tell him something big is about to go down in Miami, and it just might involve the recently reactivated CIA cell operating in the same historic building that plotted the overthrow of Fidel Castro.

The intelligence community isn’t amused, and they want answers:

How did Serge and Coleman get so cozy with the president of a banana republic?

Who is the femme fatale with a heart of gold—and national pride?

Why is the congressman in favor of the latest oil spill?

When did everyone in the city forget how to drive?

And what about the Most Laid Man in Miami?

Meanwhile, a mysterious international man of intrigue is shipping military arms around the clock, in competition with clandestine flights of souvenirs, causing the office of Homeland Security to take measures against people who aren’t scared enough. The crossfire of chaos continues to escalate as Serge plays Extreme Dominos in Little Havana, hurtling everyone toward a fateful climax that seems destined for the hemispheric summit jamboree on the shores of Biscayne Bay.

So put on your favorite pink flamingo shirt, hit the dunes of South Beach, and find all the answers in . . . Pineapple Grenade!

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Dorsey fans clamor for Serge. Dexter just can’t compete with this guy. For non-stop spy-jinks and neo-crusted cackles, head down to Miami for Tim Dorsey’s explosive Pineapple Grenade.” (Miami Herald )

“Pineapple Grenade is a topsy-turvy, slap-happy romp through Florida.” (Sun-Sentinel )

“Pineapple Grenade displays Dorsey’s talents as a comedian, a Florida historian, a political and social commentator, and a well-seasoned writer.” (Gainesville Times )

“A “guy” book, a real “man’s man” kind of novel. But kind of fun for the ladies to enjoy as well - they kind of give women an insight into the weird, wonderful way a man’s mind works when the boys are let loose with their toys.” (Ventura County Star )

“A blast… side-splitting satire.” (Richmond Times-Dispatch )

“Bestseller Dorsey dishes up his Miami mayhem with a side order of mordant wit … neither Dorsey’s fast-paced prose nor his delight in skewering human foolishness has lost its mischievous sparkle.” (Publishers Weekly )

“Hilarious” (Oklahoma City Oklahoman )

“A successful blend of high stakes thriller action a la Miami Vice with laid back beachcombing style.” (Denver Examiner )

“Up a notch … Dorsey’s 15th pits Serge against what may be the only folks as dysfunctional as he is: members of the international intelligence community.” (Kirkus Reviews )

“Bestseller Dorsey dishes up his Miami mayhem with a side order of mordant wit … neither Dorsey’s fast-paced prose nor his delight in skewering human foolishness has lost its mischievous sparkle.” (Go386.com )

“A rollicking ride” (All Good Things and More )

4.0 out of 5 stars Love me some Serge March 21, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Dorsey and Serge will always entertain me, I believe. The insane premeditated murders always leave me wondering how the hell Dorsey thought them up. Being a lifelong Floridian, I revel in the Florida history and locales. The banter between Serge and Coleman always makes me laugh. Pineapple Grenade was no different. I flew through the book in a mere couple of days. Somehow Dorsey takes the same 'ole story and makes it very interesting. If you are a Dorsey fan you know, basically, what is going to happen but, somehow it is different every time. I love the ride.

In this one, Serge decides he is going to both clean up Miami of tourist crime and become a spy for whatever country takes him first. Super Serge made me laugh out loud and I was almost brought to tears by the ending.

I loved it.

And is there a better "add absolutely nothing to the story" than Johnny Vegas? I think not!

4.0 out of 5 stars Serge in all his glory.... March 9, 2012
By Expert
Format:Hardcover
Tim Dorsey's Pineapple Grenade amounts to an Academy Award nomination for Serge Storms who is having his shining moment in Miami...home to Little Havana, third-world politicos, drugs, gun runners and physically enhanced women. No one likes center stage more than Serge and he has higher aspirations in 2012. Ingenious methods for vermin extinction are fine but Serge now wants to be a spy and the time and place are perfect ! The Summit of the Americas is upcoming and there is rumor of an assassination plot involving Costa Gordan President Guzman. Serge prevents one attempt on Guzman's life and he becomes an aide de camp to the President while running, gunning and bonking with the luscious Felicia, an embassy spy for Costa Gorda.

In the mix are bumbling U.S. spy agencies, gun dealers, big oil and high level political operatives not to mention petty crooks, street letharios and bad drivers. The plot and storyline of Pineapple Grenade are so frenetic and convoluted that making sense of the myriad of double and triple crosses is harder than Coleman passing a drug test. As usual, the bad guys are hard to identify but Serge has no problem. His motives are clear and he is having a whale of a time as a provocateur. Reading Pineapple Grenade is like watching children play... you might not understand what they're doing but it makes you feel good. Dorsey's latest is funny and fast and guaranteed to make you smile.

4.0 out of 5 stars More fun with Serge March 12, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Pineapple Grenade by Tim Dorsey is the newest addition in the continuous adventures of Serge Storms, the internationally acclaimed Florida Folklorists and occasional serial killer. The good guys and the bad guys of the Black Ops variety are busily confusing each other as usual, when Serge gets the itch to try his hand at being a spy. Ever faithful, Coleman stumbles along at his side and even picks up some party pals who learn together that straight razors are not the best thing to use in crowded spaces for cutting stuff. Along the way Serge encounters a gorgeous lady spy, but not as much history as Serge fans are used too, though Surge on a grounded airplane is almost as much fun as Surge on a train.
If your world is making you angry, this as any of the other Serge stories will quickly reboot your sense of humor, as Surge fights to bring order to our totally whacked out world with his usual OCD brilliance. I really enjoyed the realism of the Rebel's depiction and would have liked to see more of them.
