So if it wasn't for the weak key ring design I'd give this five stars.

I have had this for some time now and it has brought me peice of mind when I leave the bike outdoors for periods of time.

Only complaint is that the pin for the seat didn't fit either of my seat collars.

Unfortunately, these locks are easy to open without use of the key and bike thieves know about it. I recently had my rear wheel stolen while using Pinhead skewers. After asking at local bike shops, I've discovered that they can be opened with a universal socket such as the product from Gator Grip <...>

Update on Aug 2013:
I received a set of washers from Pinhead to use to prevent the locks from so easily being opened. With the washers I was unable to get the locks off with the Gator Grips. But I imagine that someone can still get these off with some effort. I live in Oakland and park my bike at the West Oakland Bart station. Needless to say, it is a high crime area. I will still lock both wheels with a u lock even with the pinhead locks and the new washers. I think that these will work well if you are in a low crime area or are leaving it locked up for a short period of time.

For those concerned about thieves defeating this product with a universal socket such as the Gator Grip, the company now has these "security washers" that prevents such tools to be used. If for some reason you didn't receive one with your order OR you currently have one, contact pinhead and they will send you the washers for free.

With that being said, quality appears well made. Parts have no gotten loose on me yet. The only complaint I have is that the seat post lock is somewhat large and ugly, but if you look at the design, I guess there's no other way to implement their locking system without it being so ugly. Better to have piece of mind and live with ugliness than worry about missing seats I guess.

All and all, it's a great insurance investment.

I already had a set of these for one of my bikes, and I decided to get another set for my new bike. Everything works great. The set now comes with a special washer so it can't be removed with gator grips. The rear wheel skewer was just barely long enough for my bike. Sadly the seatpost lock was incompatible with my seatpost clamp.

Just got the set and its amazing, the old gator grip trick to open doesnt work anymore with thr new washer design. Now when i lock my bike i dont have to take the wheel out and lock to the frame. I had hydralic disc brakes and someone played with my bike while it was locked up by squeezing the brakes. Turns out hyrdralic brakes get locked up when younsqueeze them with no wheel in. 60 to get fixed plus had to walk home. Not ever again with this product

Thanks!

I use these pinhead locks on my hybrid/commuter bike so my wheels/seat are there after i get off the train. There easy to install but be wary of the key, it has fallen of my key ring on more the one occasion, its probably worth while to order a second key off the companies website ($20 with a coupon code). So if it wasn't for the weak key ring design I'd give this five stars.

I wouldn't depend on these as my sole line in security, but as an extra deterrent they work well. I use them with a 7 foot Kryptoflex cable and Kryptonite Evo Mini. Nothing will stop a determined thief, but this setup has "go away" written all over it. Your bike just has to be less nickable than the next decent bike - these work well for that purpose.

Worked well for me, with a few caveats:
1.) Somewhere along the line between opening the box and installing the skewers, I lost one of the security-keyed nuts. So my seat is still using a quick connect, and I'm hauling a cable lock around to secure it.
2.) The front skewer was dangerously loose after a week of heavy commute use, despite being safely secured at installation. This issue has not recurred.
3.) The keychain unit just seems about 2x bigger than it needs to be.

Despite those issues, I feel like my bike is now harder to steal than the bike next to it in the Boston subway bike cage.

Regarding the "buy this common tool to defeat the system" comments: The devices are now shipping with a special washer with a raised edge that you put under the security nut to defeat that attack. Seems like it might work. Has anyone used the special wrench to defeat this system with the updated security nuts installed?

Love the skewers for the wheels. My bicycle has a different stem for the handlebars as well as a different seat post, so those bolts do not fit. I wish I had known as I spent an extra $20 for the "four pack" and should have just gotten the two. Was already at the bike shop installing them so it would have been a waste of time to send the whole thing back. BOO.
