Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

When Bill O'Reilly interviewed then-Senator Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential elections, the two had a lively debate about the nation's future.

Since that time, America has changed rapidly—some would even say seismically. And many believe these shifts are doing more than just rocking the political and social climate; they're rocking the American core.

What are these changes? Who, in addition to President Obama, have been the biggest forces behind them? What exactly do they mean for you, the everyday American citizen? How are they affecting your money, health, safety, freedom, and standing in this nation? Which are Pinheaded moves and which are truly Patriotic? In his latest spirited book, O'Reilly prompts further debate with the President and the American people on the current state of the union.

After five consecutive, no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is megabestsellers, you can count on Bill to offer blunt and constructive political commentary. And as he did in his popular memoir, he offers some introspection too, looking back at his own actions and those of past Pinheads and Patriots who have inspired a code of conduct for such taxing times.

As always, O'Reilly is fair, balanced, and uncompromisingly tough when guarding the American way. Only Pinheads would fail to fight for what they love most about this country or to embrace some measure of change to make it better. The rest of us Patriots will read this book to discover the difference between the two.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommened Reading November 20, 2011
Format:Paperback
I am neither a follower nor a fan of Bill O'Reilly, have read none of his prior books, and rarely watch Fox News (or CNN, MSNBC, ABC or any television for that matter). On top of that, I am politically a (struggling) Centrist, and refuse to identify directly and / or solely with any one party or ideology. However I was very optimistic in the first thirty to forty pages as I sensed I would be reading a non-biased work; one that gives credit where it's due, and points out areas of failure when they occur. Per the title, people are either Patriots for their commendable actions, or Pinheads for their foolish ones. This actually appealed to me - keep it black and white, simple and fair.

After thirty or forty pages I reached what I'll call a gate, and when I opened it I felt I was headed down an old path - just another version of hammering from the Right. I could see the writing as obviously intended to criticize the actions and policies of President Barack Obama and other Liberals, simultaneously bestowing kudos on them for small, insignificant, non-political actions. I considered his method as beating someone with a hose rather than a chain. In an effort to show non bias, he gives Pinhead status to several actions of G.W. Bush and other Conservatives, and even ever so gently knocks Rush Limbaugh.

I will say I feel the book is likely based more on emotion and ideology than substance. Many of O'Reilly's comments and statistics are "off the cuff" and simply a matter of personal opinion, rather than documented fact. For example, when he enters into a diatribe on what he calls The Tech Offensive, or how electronic media technology is virtually ruining the children of this country, he cites a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation stating that kids spend 7.5 hours a day on average consuming electronic stimulation. He then follows this assertion with a chart from Kaiser listing six categories of electronic stimulation totaling 11.8 hours a day, not the 7.5 just cited from them. Oh well..... That's small stuff.

As I progressed further I took another hard look, and began to understand exactly where the author was coming from. When I reached the section where numerous politicians and public figures are classified as either Patriots or Pinheads, I honestly couldn't disagree with his impartial and non-partisan assessments. I feel Bill O'Reilly is speaking from his heart, and while at times he communicates things differently than I would, we're often on the same page. It would not be difficult to imagine a meaningful and productive conversation with him. I honestly don't believe he's being malicious towards anyone in particular, but rather has a very clear and concise personal definition of what defines a Pinhead or a Patriot.

If you are far left or right of center politically, this book will likely not appeal to you, as you'll feel O'Reilly is either too harsh or too soft on his Obama assessment. The overall ratings I've read support this observation, as those at the extreme ends cannot, and are not willing to try, listening for a change. However, if you read the book with an open mind I believe you will find, as I have, it offers a different constructive criticism approach which I truly appreciate.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bill mailed this one in - not as good as Bold Fresh September 24, 2010
By JJ Rock
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an actual review from someone who has read the entire book. Seems a bit rare here.

I liked Bold Fresh, it read like O'Reilly talking but included some great stories and insight into Bill. Sadly Pinheads and Patriots is a pretty lazy effort by Bill, especially if you watch his nightly show.

For me the Pinheads and Patriots theme became old in a hurry. While it's unique for a while, it reminds me of the Saturday Night Live skits that are turned into movies. Pinheads and Patriots is a unique bit that Bill does at the end of his show for a few minutes. In small doses it is interesting. As a book, it's repetitive and frankly I wasn't that interested in Bill looking at historical figures as Pinhead or Patriots.

Obviously Obama gets a lot of coverage in the book. Bill is fair with him to a point. Bill lost me in spending a large chapter of the book transcribing his 30 minute interview with Obama in 2008 and then doing a follow-up on what Obama said. Bill covered this interview to death on his show (ditto for Barney Frank). You can take any politician and two years later analyze an interview they did finding all kinds of issues. I am not an Obama fan, but this was lazy by Bill. Put a fresh interview in the book, then you have something.

Early in the book Bill thanks his fans and talks about how he like to give back to them. His reward for me was charging more for the Kindle version than the hardcover. For that Bill you are a Pinhead. (Sorry, I had to)

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly pointless June 11, 2012
Format:Hardcover
This is O'Reilly's fifth book in five years, and each one just keeps getting better. As much as I like this book, it is surely only O'Reilly's second best book. His best book remains "Those Who Trespass: A Novel of Murder and Television" Those Who Trespass: A Novel of Television and Murder, still today his single best book about serial killings and TV coverage.

In many ways this book is a sequel to Those Who Trespass, with Bill O'Reilly the paranoid, arrogant, insecure, supremely egotistical serial killer murdering the pinheads of history and the pinheads of contemporary politics and entertainment; while making sweet intellectual love to all us patriots.

What I like best about O'Reilly is his objectivity and fairness of treatment, he always remains impartial and independent. This book is no exception, the "spin stops here." O'Reilly gives great commentary on various political and non-political people, deeming them either pinheads or patriots. Great stuff!

"Pinheads & Patriots" is like Professional Wrestling for intellectuals. And you don't have to be literate to enjoy it, because there is an audible version. It is a no-holds barred political wrestling match the "Body Bill O'Reilly" against the pinheads of history. In his wrestling leotard O'Reilly lies on top of these pinheads and holds them down underneath his sweet sweaty Body. He goes after Barney Frank with a hold only fit for (well you get the picture) for his lack of responsibility for the mess he caused on Wall-Street. Other pinheads include Janis Joplin, Mel Gibson, General Custer, James Buchanan, Andrew Jackson, of course George pinhead Soros, Madonna, John cheating Edwards, Warren Harding, Jimmy Carter and Jim Druggy Morrison. It is about time somebody called these bastards out. Wrestled them down and pinned them to the mat.

I also agreed with all his patriots, especially Tony Snow, Bush's former press secretary. But also Reagan, Lincoln, George H. W. Bush, General Washington, General Grant, General Patton, and Vietnam Vets, all Patriots of patriots. I was pleased to see so many Real American Warriors on the Patriots list, because when U.S. and its Generals are at war the world is peaceful.

But he also included Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron, Bill loves Black-Folks, at least those who know how to throw a ball. And to show his independence and fairness patriots further include Robert Kennedy, Cesar Union-man Chavez. He doesn't forget Native Americans with his choice of Chief Joseph. Impressively impartial and fair.

It is during these Patriot moments that the wrestling match turns love fest, with the wrestlers consummating their love from Bill's mouth, with praise and admiration. Truly beautiful and inspiring, bold and surprising commentary that only someone as clever and witty has Mr. O'Really could pull off.

But I nearly fell out of my chair and dropped by pistol when I saw he hadn't made up his mind about Barack Hussein Obama. The front cover suggests Obama is a pinhead (which warmed my heart) and O'Really a patriot. The book definitely lets the reader down. A very clever turn in the plot of an otherwise predictable plot of parsimony and futility.

What pinheads and patriots best illustrates is that O'Really is the Joan Rivers of FOX News. This is gossipmongering and parsimony at its best, with just enough praise to our heroes to take away the guilt of our hate. It is not easy to be a gossip queen and rule the political air-waves, but O'Really does it. This book is 250 pages of off topic ad hominem commentary with no point but to entertain us readers. Thanks Mr. O'Really. It is just like being back in middle school when things were simple, cruel, and pointless. O'Really's point is brilliant: American politics are simple, cruel and pointless, so you might-as-well make some "Joan Rivers" money from the spectacle. You got my money Bill, well done.

Although I am most impressed that O'Reilly can make the New York Times Best Seller list with ad hominem drivel, I was very disappointed he didn't have D-list stars, like Kelly Osborn, Paris Hilton, and some overly flamboyant malicious gay men and miserable unkind lesbians also add their commentary, it would have brought in some real star power and added even more meanness and pointlessness, while at the same time reinforcing some good old red, white and blue stereotypes, to this excellent political allegory.

God bless Bill. And let us all salute Mr. Bill O'Really and FOX News for their ability to make money from the hollowness of what is American politics and critical thinking. Here, here to King of the airwaves Bill O'Really.
