Biography

Although Pepper's members are originally from Kona, HI, the trio doesn't play traditional Hawaiian music. Rather, Pepper's music is a melodic and accessible blend of alternative pop/rock, punk, and reggae. Formed in 1996, Pepper is hardly the only alterna-rock combo that has been inspired by Jamaican sounds. But while other punk-minded alternative pop/rockers who emerged in the '90s were greatly… Read more in Amazon's Pepper Store

Editorial Reviews

Pepper returns with their 2008 album Pink Crustaceans and Good Vibrations, their fifth studio album and follow up to the Atlantic Records Release No Shame. This album sees the band at their most eclectic and captures the essence of the Kona Boys arriving in California as seasoned veterans of Rock!

5.0 out of 5 stars Different but good!!!!!!!, July 22, 2008
This review is from: Pink Crustaceans (Audio CD)
I used to listen to nothing but heavier rock and some r&B. That all changed about 5 years ago when i started listening to 311 and raggae/ska/whatever you want to call it. Thats when I met Pepper. Maybe not the most talented but at least the funnest band I have ever seen live. My fiancee and I absolutely love all of their CD's and this one did not disappoint. The track listing breaks down like this.

1. Freeze (10/10) - a little different than what they have done before. Nice little groove that you can dance, grind, or chill to. Whatever your pleasure is.
2. Davey Jones Locker (10/10) - beachy/relaxing/love song? Yeah all of the above. Has slower almost R&B like verses with some soul! The boys sing it nicely though. I did not like this one that much at first but ended up loving it after a few listens
3. Things That You Love (10/10) - probably my favorite tune from the CD. Catchy and relaxing. This almost sounds like it could have been on Kona Town. GOOD STUFF
4. Wet Dreams (7/10) - this is where Pepper throws the curveball. I really dont know how to describe this song other than different. Has a nice little synth 80's vibe to it I guess. I cant figure out how much I do or dont like this song. I hated it at first but it seems to be growing on me. Still not a bad tune.
5. Love 101 (10/10) - see "things that you love". This song is your typical Pepper....maybe a little sweeter. Perfect for laying back and relaxing to. Funny but sad meaning....Ah the lessons of love....or wanting to get some.
6. Lucy (9.5/10) - older song with the first version in Peppers To Da Max album. I still think I like that version better even though it is almost oversung. Still good though. Very catchy slow moving song with a prominent bass. Listen to the lyrics....too many DUI's for Lucy... pretty amusing.
7. Musical 69 (9/10) - Good, lyrically makes me think about point and shoot....the sexual topic(more so than most Pepper songs). Catchy and again beachy. Fun song. Keyboard sounds like an organ in the background.
8. The Phoenix (9/10) - a lot darker song than what Pepper usually does. I am starting to really feel this song though, especially the small breakdown in the middle. A lot of feeling was put in this song and it actually shows some band maturity(could be good or bad).
9. Do Something (8/10) - funkier than normal Pepper and more rock oriented. More like Red Hot Chili Peppers meets Good Enough from No Shame.
10. Slave (9/10) - nothing special but not bad. The uh oh chorus is pretty catchy. Verses are calmer and pretty sounding. I like the way the boys show some soul.
11. Ambition (9/10) - i love steel drums and there are steel drums near the end of this baby! Anyways its a good one as well. I like the little groove on this one, typical Pepper again.
12. Stand and Fall (8/10) - starts off like some early 90's rock song and is a tiny bit different than what Pepper has done. Rocks more than it rolls.
13. Blackout () - funny verses and loud heavier guitar. I just cant take this song serious enough to give it a rating. Kind of strange. BLACKOUT!!!!
14. Drive (10/10) - slower but one of Peppers better songs. I love this one and its meaningfulness. An actual Pepper song not about getting laid but instead an unstable relationship gone down the drain. Very soulfun singing. I love the chorus on this one.
15 C***Man - hidden track.....the only thing I can say is WOW, see blackout and drop the heavy guitars. Title rhymes with sock but kids read these reviews.

Overall its not a step backwards but not quite a full step forward. Pepper is showing some evolution and it will be very interesting to see where they are heading after this one. In comparison with their other albums it lands about 3rd or 4th.

1. No Shame (10/10)
2. Kona Town (10/10)
3. Pink Crustaceans (9.5/10)
4. In With The Old (9/10)
5. To Da Max: Mistakes and Outtakes (7/10)
6. Give'n It (5/10)

This review is coming from someone who also listens to Tool, Pearl Jam, Live, Alice in Chains, and Foo Fighters. Pepper has some real talent and they put a lot into their music. If you are looking for a band with a good vibe and chill attitude check them out. I also recommend O.A.R., The Expendables, Ballyhoo!, and Passafire. Some good ol Bob and/or 311never hurts either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peppers best yet..., August 7, 2008
This review is from: Pink Crustaceans (Audio CD)
Alright, this album is everything Pepper has worked so hard to become...if you were disappointed with "No Shame" or your new to Pepper get in your car and go buy this album, you'll love it.. heres a quick run down...
1. Freeze- tight opening track, Kaleos vocals are the best they've ever been, good party/dance/jam song.gets you going for the rest of the album.

2. Davey Jones Locker- this is my least favorite song on the record, its some what catchy but just doesnt do it for me.

3.Things That You Love- Great love song, very catchy, good rhythm, great vocals, you'll catch yourself singing it.

4.Wet Dreams- This song is good evidence of Peppers evolving stlye, caught me off guard after "things that..." i like it though..good pop rock song.

5. Love 101- cool song, nice blend of old/new pepper (which they do throughout the album).

6.Lucy- this song has been in Peppers songbook for a while, it was featured on "to the max" their b-side album.newer version, well produced i still like the original better..slower song about a barfly.

7.Musical 69- the title describes it very well, sorta funky, fun song.

8.Pheonix- awesome song, maybe my favorite, very dramatic, well written.

9.Do Something- the albums party song, reminds me of red hot chili peppers a little bit..

10.Slave- good song, nothing special..leave it at that..

11.Ambition- this song grew on me really quick, id call it classic pepper..

12.Stand and Fall- another pop rock song about friendship, good song.

13. Blackout- cool song, really different from any other pepper song, its fun I like it. pepper meets nada surf and the minutemen.

14.Drive- second favorite on the album, good reggae song, catchy lyrics.

Plain and simple- you can put this album in (new to pepper or not) listen to it clear through and like it. from that point all the songs will grow on you, until youve listened to it so much your laying on the floor foaming from the mouth...good comeback from "No Shame"
