5.0 out of 5 stars Pink Dice
I don't believe Sudiepav read the same Pink Dice book that I did. Curious review as I read Pink Dice and found it fluid, well-written, engaging and thoroughly entertaining. The writing style is almost lyrical, many phrases have a poetic turn and the "awakening" theme hits home. I am glad someone has written about this era. Ellen Everman captures the fun, excitement,...

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the worst books I've read in a long time
I knew that this would be a bit of a summer fluff read, and I was intrigued at the inclusion of local references. I found the references to be few and far between and not always accurate. I also found that many of the details not jibing with what actually went on at that time. The protagonist mourned the loss of full-service gas stations in 1969 and having to pump her...

The writing style is almost lyrical, many phrases have a poetic turn and the "awakening" theme hits home. I am glad someone has written about this era. Ellen Everman captures the fun, excitement, and high color of this explosive decade with an observant and keen eye. The story is captivating and I'm glad it was recommended to me to read. I'll pass that on. It's well worth reading. Maybe twice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, I recommend this novel!, September 2, 2008

I will start off by saying that I am a 20 something born the 80's. I cannot personally relate to the era of this novel. Still, it is nice to read a novel written in such detail where I feel like I am part of the story. I feel like I am there and I can see the moonflowers. I feel like I am there living the life that used to be more simple than it is today. Where children, and adults, had more respect toward each other and their elders. A life in a world I would like my children experience, but fear it is impossible. It was entertaining to read a novel that takes place in an area I can relate to. It gives me hope that one day young teenagers can again roam downtown Cincinnati or the woods at night by themselves without fear.
I think that the reviewer who gave this novel a one star review only read the last half of the novel. I hope you don't make that same mistake. The entire novel is most definitely worth a read or two!

I also found that many of the details not jibing with what actually went on at that time. The protagonist mourned the loss of full-service gas stations in 1969 and having to pump her own gas. I know that in Cincinnati in 1969, I surely was NOT pumping my own gas. The characters seemed wooden and the overkill of rhetoric about the plight of the 50s housewife got old quickly. This seemed more like jr. hi fiction, but I don't like recommending anything this badly written for junior high.

5.0 out of 5 stars SO POPULAR, December 9, 2008
This review is from: Pink Dice (Hardcover)
I hear there is a long waiting list to read this book at all the 40-some Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky libraries. No wonder. It's fun yet lyrical! More like to Kill A Mockingbird subject matter and evokes memories of that great era. Good writing.
