Carla Herrera has a great sense of characterization and a penchant for apocalypse. In structure, theme, and quality of writing, this book reminded me of John Brunner's great novels (The Sheep Look Up, Stand on Zanzibar), though on a much smaller scale. The setup is done well and is generally realistic.
Overall, I would compare it to the movie 'Super 8'. Strong and interesting characters well depicted, then placed into the familiar situation of the little guy against the big bad military types.
