The FAQ series aren't meant to be dry academia. They are a way for people who love the music, or are inrigued by it, to get a unique and fresh perspective on a certain body of work. It's really cool for those who openly enjoy an artist to put their personal thoughts, and their likes and dislikes into book form. In the Syd era, The Pink Floyd was as much about wit and humor as anything else and this book takes that original sense of fun and extends that over their whole career. If you want basic biography it's out there, but for me this has that plus intelligent arguments over what the author gets from the music and band. Perhaps the people who think they could do better should back it up with something of their own to offer. For those of us who are less pedantic, this is simply a fun and rewarding read about a great band through the eyes of someone who knows their stuff.

This is a great book. It explores the development of Pink Floyd and never forgets the orgins of Pink Floyd. If you never knew much about the first lead singer of Floyd, this book will inform you. Syd Barrett is the orginal lead singer of Floyd and this book will take you through his life and music. It is a good read. You might not agree with everything in this book, but you will be amazed by the detail. The author writes from the perceptive of a fan, which is what makes it enjoyable to read. He also talks about the musical details of the records that really make them come alive. I think it is a worth while book for any Pink Floyd fan.

I received this book for Christmas, and I have to say that I am glad I did not spend my own money on it. Most of this book is NOT factual. It merely states the opinions of the author. If this is what you are looking for then save the money and log on to one of the many Pink Floyd forums on the internet. There you can get for free what Mr. Shea asks you to pay for: an opinion! There are a few chapters which warrant a read, such as "I was there... Mark Campbell: The 1972-73 tours through a fans eyes", and "I was there...John Leckie, Recording engineer". But with chapter titles like "What Pink Floyd songs stick out like sore thumbs?" and "What were the Floyd's drugs of choice?" this book can hardly be taken seriously, or at least it shouldn't be by anyone who is an ardent student of the Floyd.

In my opinion, and I am sure there are many different ones, the book is one of the most useless publications about that band in years.THAT IS WHY I HAD TO WRITE THAT SURVEY I was looking forward to get a book that might offer some new insides of the bands history, as the cover promises ' Everything left to know,...and more'. I was pretty sure that there is not too much left to know,.....and what would the the '....and more' ?? Alone that unbeatably stupid sentence should have warned me as it lacks any logic (my fault). THAT IS WHY I HAD TO WRITE THAT SURVEY As well, it would have helped to read about the author, another person who jumped on the train on making money with a rip-off of repetitive information of a commmerically successful band. Again, in my personal opinion, poor writing that makes it hard to get through, even the contributors are so weak that you can hardly find anything worth spending time on. THAT IS WHY I HAD TO WRITE THAT SURVEY The author should try to write about the 'Cubbies' next time, as he started well on the 'unauthorized biography?' of a stadium already. Looking forward on your next publication, may be try the 'Kama Sutra FAQ' ? Good luck |
