Book Description

May 1, 2006
Rebecca Abbot's life has just gone from vintage feather boas to boring office casual. Thanks to Sylvie Arnaud's heart attack, she's out of a job. But it's Sylvie's French, vaguely famous name on Rebecca's creatively embellished resume that lands her an associate editor position at romance heavyweight Candlelight Books. Editing is a far cry from scouting out exotic groceries, which is pretty much all Rebecca did for Sylvie, but Candlelight is offering an actual salary to go with her position's actual workload, and the rent is way overdue on the railroad flat she shares with her friend Wendy and her mooching ex, wanna-be writer Fleishman. Working for Candlelight is nothing like the plots of their syrupy novels, though. In fact, it's a lot like being stuck in an estrogen-heavy Fellini film. Between protecting her back from rival editor Cassie's repeated stabs, attempting a relationship with a sexy literary agent, wondering about Fleishman's new secret "project," and discovering her first truly talented author, Rebecca's learning that the business of romance is hardly a nine-to-five thing - and that editing out all her mistakes will never lead her to "happily ever after..."

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Answering an ad for a job with a "well-known publishing house," Rebecca finds herself way over her head when she is hired as an associate editor by a woman who is impressed by the name of Rebecca's former employer, an elderly woman Rebecca ran errands for. This famous house publishes hundreds of paperback romance novels each year, and there is romance in store for Rebecca, who is intrigued by a sexy-sounding literary agent and a gorgeous lawyer who is often in the same elevator. But a backstabbing coworker, a duplicitous friend, and a faux pas or two at romance conferences leave Rebecca fearing for her job. This laugh-out-loud-funny novel gives readers an insider's view of romance publishing. Romance readers will love it for its affectionate view of the romance fiction industry as well as for the happily-ever-after ending. Diana Tixier Herald

2.0 out of 5 stars Not this time, May 19, 2006

I adored Liz Ireland's previous book and was eagerly looking forward to this one.

What a letdown. It felt to me as though this storyline was simply recycled from a mish-mash of previous chick lits. Basic storyline: girl likes guy - guy is clueless - girl gets job at publishing house - girl is clueless about most things in her life.

Sorry, but this book just did not do it for me at all. I did not like the characters, the writing was boring and the story felt as though it just went on and on and on...

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully Indulging, August 28, 2007

I absolutely adored this book. The title "The Pink Ghetto" honestly was a major turn off, as were the first sixty pages or so. But after that, the book really got going and I personally loved it. Rebecca may not exactly be a realistic character as far as a real publisher goes, but she's likeable and gets the reader on her side, which is important in chick lit books. There's nothing worse than hating the main character.

For those looking for a light, fun, and "Devil Wears Prada"-ish type book, this one would definitely be for you. Ireland's whit is fantastic.

This book was very enjoyable to read. It made me laugh out loud in some parts. I don't know if I particularly enjoyed reading this book because I would love to work for Candlelight or if it was just a great read. I love reading about the behind the scenes of writing the books I enjoy reading. My dream job would be editing books or magazines. If you like chic lit, you will enjoy this book. I don't purchase many books since I borrow from the library, (buying as many books as I read would be very expensive) but this would be a book I would buy.
