Better than Black Mountain? I think not.,
By amazing jase (Hudson Valley, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pink Mountaintops (Audio CD)
I had listened to this album a while back when I first started listening to Black Mountain and was very disappointed. After reading the other reviews, I dusted off the album and tried again and nothing has changed. Maybe this is because I was constantly comparing the album to Black Mountain, which is much more diverse and complex compared to this mediocrity. The most notable aspect of this album is that it is pretty monotonous...it drones on and on but not in the way exceptional stoner rock may. It is certainly lacking the sax and most of the electronic beats that distinguished Black Mountain from others. Perhaps the best part of this album is to see how the band evolved from an earlier effort, which never could lift them them above a regional level, to something much greater. But the final song "Atmosphere" is pretty sweet. Listen to the album depsite what I say and then agree with me.

Trephined Soul Rock,

I heard that, "[the songs] are linked by, of all things, an evangelical urgency: McBean self-consciously blends Satan-fearing Louvin Brothers sentiments with the Velvet Underground's narco-messianism and heavy doses of the 1970s California Jesus Movement's rhetoric/vibe" (www.pitchforkmedia.com).

Warm and mesmerizing. Beautiful. Get it and you won't be able to stop, either.
