Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2–5—Beery offers 30 recipes divided into four sections: "Sweet Treats," "Cookies and Cakes," "Savory Bites," and "Dazzling Drinks." As the title indicates, the focus is on three things that many little girls like: sweets, ponies, and the color pink. Unfortunately, the appeal of this glossy but flawed book stops there. Some of the dishes sound scrumptious, like "Pastel Pony Treat" and "Little Ponytail Puffs." However, the lack of any type of warning about adult guidance will limit the book's usefulness. Recipes require, for example, baking in hot ovens, chopping and coring apples (presumably with sharp knives), and mixing a Sunbeam Smoothie in a blender, all potentially dangerous for unsupervised children. Nutrition information for the recipes is not included, which may be a good thing since many rely on such ingredients as cans of frosting and packaged candies. If you're looking for a cookbook that your more feminine patrons will like, try Julia Monroe's Tiny Treats (Pleasant Co., 2006).—Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL END

This pony cookbook has super cute photos of the treats, and I almost kept it for that alone. However, I didn't feel that alone justified the purchase price. I got this for my daughter when she turned 3 and went crazy over ponies, especially My Little Pony.

She wasn't at all taken with this cookbook, probably still a bit young. So, after first checking others in the series out from our local library, we returned the pony version and bought the princess and tea party versions instead.

When I compared the recipes side by side with the Pink Princess cookbook Pink Princess Cookbook and the Tea Party cookbook Pink Princess Tea Parties (Spiral-bound), they didn't look as yummy, and in some cases were not as healthy. In the other two cookbooks, at least a few of the recipes are for non-dessert items. The recipes in the pony cookbook were higher in fat, a little too simplified (just mix marshmallow whip and peanut butter and use it as a dip for fruit or cookies- yum! NOT!), and I hate to say it since I love this series, but it seemed like the author was running out of princessy recipe ideas.

This is an awesome series for moms or grandmoms who love to bake with the special little girls in their lives. However, my advice is to check several of these from the series out of the library before you decide which one is best for your little princess!

As a grandmother I'm always searching for cookbooks that my sweet granddaughter and I can have fun using together. The Pink Ponies Cookbook is just that cookbook! There are so many fun and easy recipes that can be used for birthday parties, a child's first tea party and just plain get-togethers. Also, there's step-by-step instructions and lots of color photos in this cookbook. I can't wait to try the Fairy Dust Lollipops and the Ponytail Pretzels. If you delight in this cookbook, you should also try some other Barbara Berry's cookbooks such as the Pink Princess Cookbook and the Pink Princess Tea Parties.

There are thirty recipes in the Pink Ponies Cookbook, all excellent for a pony party theme. I really liked all the fun ideas and the nice photo layouts throughout. There are a lot of recipes to choose from, both savory and sweet, so a whole meal could easily be presented to the girls -- and their parents, also! Sandwiches, pasta and nachos, all tying in to the pony party theme, would work well for the main course. Then there are drink and dessert recipes to round it all out. Of course, there are apples, these are dipped in white candy coating and sprinkled with nuts and tiny candies. Since many little ones' favorite ponies are magical, there are treats like rainbow Fairy Dust Lollipops. The Pony Party Ice Cream Cones combine ice cream and cake all in one portable and edible container! And the carousel cake takes the pink pony cookies (recipe included) and places them around the cake to produce a lovely carousel effect when you add some extra candy. If you have a pony lover in your home, Pink Ponies Cookbook would be a big help in coming up with the perfect pony party!
