It's amazing how these guys can take a bunch of tired Ramones riffs and make songs that really have a life of their own. This record is catchy like the plague. I don't think it's as good as Born On The First Of July, so maybe buy that album first, but after a five year break between albums, and assuming I'd never hear anything new from these guys again, this album is a nice surprise, and a thoroughly worthwhile antidote to the pretentious cynical rock scene of 2005. It even has an audio commentary at the end, where they play the album a second time and talk over it.

I'm really surprised this record even exists. If you've been following Chixdiggit! you know their last
record came out in 2000 so you wouldn't be blamed if you thought these guys were defunct. Lending more evidence to that train of thought was the fact that their last album was the weakest of the bunch so they in turn wouldn't be blamed for packing up and heading home. Thankfully that isn't the case as this is their best album ever. The basic formula remains unchanged, sped up Ramones style songs with goofy lyrics and lots of backing vocals, but they must have really hunkered down these last few years as they've seriously upgraded their sound. Gone our the lackluster cuts that tended to drag on their last record (for the most part!) and back is the infectious energy, fun lyrics and great melodies of their earlier work but only stronger. While most of the songs are top notch the mid paced monster does rear its head in a couple places but even on these they've mixed in some tasteful choruses and solos to make them more paletable. Those brief moments are washed right over by the high energy cuts like the opener "Welcome To The Diaso" and super sing along "Geocities Kitty" that beat anything in their back catalog in terms of pure energy and catchy songwriting. Another song that leaves me rolling on the floor every time is the lyrics on "You're Pretty Good" which is basically what someone said to them after a show. You can imagine they were less than enthusiastic to hear that. That kid must not have heard this record yet! Seriously, this is the best stuff this band has ever put out so if you're a fan this album is not to be missed. If you've never heard them before than think of a funnier, faster version of the Ramones and you're starting to get the picture. Check out more reviews at ohboydestroy.

This band never makes a sub-par record. I've always been a fan since their SubPop days. They're great live and they make super-catchy songs.

After a 5 year break Chixdiggit return with another album that manages to be just as good as (and sound exactly like) their last 3 albums.
If you didn't know, Chixdiggit play upbeat, happy sounding pop punk. Their lyrics rarely offer much depth, but the songs are usually pretty funny. The real reason they beat out much of the pop-punk competetion is that even though their sound hasn't changed one iota from album one, the hooks and melodies are just killer! This is the catchiest band on the planet, seriously. Pink Razors was actually the first Chixdiggit album I heard. I just kept hearing how fun and catchy their music was and decided to check them out. I bought the album right before going to work one day and I got through the first two songs on the drive in. My initial impression was, "These guys don't sound like they're anything special." but when I turned off the music and stepped out of my car, in about five seconds I was humming "Welcome To The Daiso." Thats how catchy they are. I listened to a two-minute song ONCE and I was already humming it without realizing it. Catchiest. Band. Ever. Within two weeks I had the other three albums. Now they're one of my fav pop-punk bands. And they've kept it up for FOUR albums. Which one to get first? It doest matter, all of them are good, all of them are super catchy, and all of them basically sound the same. They don't just write the same songs over and over, but if you buy more than one album you'll see what I mean. If you like pop-punk, you'll love these guys. If you don't, Chixdiggit probably won't convert you, but I bet they'll at least get something stuck in your head. |
