5.0 out of 5 stars critical to understanding the development of American law enforcement, July 1, 2009

"Alan Pinkerton was an important leader in the Underground Railroad, protected President Lincoln, and was General McClellan's chief of espionage during the Civil War. Pinkerton pioneered many techniques of forensics and undercover operations. With his sons, he helped track down and capture bank robbers in the Wild West and captured the New Orleans Mafia leaders in the 1890s. The Pinkertons' role in the development of labor organizations is also well documented, as they were often hired by industrialists to interfere with unions. 564 pages.
