After the raging success of the single 'Happy Birthday', Martin Rushent continued to produce the band's further single and subsequent album release. The result was the perfect setting for Clare Grogan's childlike voice. The songs on Pinky Blue are mostly bright, fun and colorful. The album includes two of the group's biggest singles, 'I Could Be Happy' and 'See Those Eyes'. Unfortunately, the Pinky Blue album was met with a critical backlash due to the radically different and seemingly less credible sound. Despite the critical bashing, the album achieved a decent chart placing and remains a fan favorite to this day. The cover of the Neil Diamond track, 'Song Sung Blue', is often misunderstood as a mistake the band should never have made. While it does not warrant regular listening, it was clearly done very tongue-in-cheek, and stands as an amusing novelty song. Other highlights from the album include the highly catchy title track, 'Pinky Blue', and the amazing 'Think That It Might'. This song shows just how amazingly Clare's voice soars in the proper musical setting.

The CD includes a number of bonus tracks, though many are not essential. While great at producing wonderful albums, Martin Rushent had a tendency to have most of the vocals removed when preparing 12" mixes of singles. As a result, extended versions of 'See Those Eyes' and 'Pinky Blue' are only a shell of the exciting alternate mixes that they could have been. The flexipop tracks included here are straight from the actual flexidisc, so the sound quality is definitely degraded. Other than that, the CD is from master sources and does not suffer from compression or other attempts at improving the sound. The booklet for Pinky Blue is bewildering.
