Book Description

Ready-to-Read. Level 3
From the earliest stages of sounding out words to the excitement of reading a whole book without help, Ready-to-Read books open up a world of possibilities to children at three different levels:

  • LEVEL 1: STARTING TO READ
  • LEVEL 2: READING TOGETHER
  • LEVEL 3: READING ALONE

Pinky has twenty-seven stuffed animals, and Rex has twenty-seven dinosaurs. They have everything the same, and that's the way it should be with best friends. So what do they do when there's only one pink dinosaur in the museum gift shop, and they both want it? Could Pinky's pesky little sister Amanda have the answer?

Editorial Reviews

Review

School Library Journal Childlike, appealing, and believable...good additions to the scanty collection of easy fiction for young readers.

The Horn Book The characters are appealing and human, and the colorful illustrations are filled with action and detail...showing the gentle warmth of the stories.

About the Author

James Howe is the author of over eighty books for young readers, including the modern classic Bunnicula and its highly popular sequels.  In 2001, Howe published The Misfits, the story of four outcast seventh-graders who try to end name-calling in their school.  The Misfits is now widely read and studied in middle schools throughout the country, and was the inspiration for the national movement known as No Name-Calling Week (www.nonamecallingweek.org ), an event observed by thousands of middle and elementary schools annually.   Totally Joe, a companion novel to The Misfits, was published in 2005, and a second companion novel, Addie on the Inside, is being published in 2011.  Howe’s many other books for children from preschool through teens frequently deal with the acceptance of difference and being true to oneself.

Melissa Sweet has illustrated over 80 children’s books including A River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams  by Jen Bryant, a 2008 Caldecott Honor book, an NCTE Notable Children’s Book and a New York Times Best Illustrated, among other awards.  Her collages and paintings have appeared in many publications including the New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, Nick Jr. Magazine and on greeting cards, cookbooks and posters.   Her toys for eeBoo have won the Oppenheim and Parents Choice Awards. She has written  and illustrated three books, Tupelo Rides the Rails, and  Carmine: A Little More Red,  a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Books, 2005. Her newest book,  Balloons Over Broadway, a picture book biography that was named a 2011 Publishers Weekly Best Non-fiction Picture Book.

When she is not in her studio, she can be found taking in an art class, hiking with  her dogs or riding her bicycle. She lives with her family in Rockport, Maine.

More About the Author

James Howe has written more than eighty books in the thirty-plus years he's been writing for young readers. It sometimes confuses people that the author of the humorous Bunnicula series also wrote the dark young adult novel, The Watcher, or such beginning reader series as Pinky and Rex and the E.B. White Read Aloud Award-winning Houndsley and Catina and its sequels. But from the beginning of his career (which came about somewhat by accident after asking himself what kind of vampire a rabbit might make), he has been most interested in letting his imagination take him in whatever direction it cared to. So far, his imagination has led him to picture books, such as I Wish I Were a Butterfly and Brontorina (about a dinosaur who dreams of being a ballerina), mysteries, poetry (in the upcoming Addie on the Inside), and fiction that deals with issues that matter deeply to him. He is especially proud of The Misfits, which inspired national No Name-Calling Week (www.nonamecallingweek.org) and its sequel Totally Joe. He does not know where his imagination will take him in the next thirty-plus years, but he is looking forward to finding out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on resolving conflict!, April 30, 2001
By
Kristine Thurgood (Nibley, UT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pinky & Rex (Ready-To-Read, Level 3) (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book with my pre-schooler. I liked how the author gives us two characters who have a lot of differences, yet are such good friends. The names of the main characters also goes beyond what we might typically think of as boy or girl likes and dislikes. For example, the boy's name is Pinky because he likes the color pink, and the girl's name is Rex because that's her favorite dinosaur. The thing I enjoyed most about this book though was that towards the end they come across a problem where only one dinosaur is left to purchase from the museum gift shop. I really liked how these children learned to resolve the problem on their own and did so creatively! What a wonderful lesson for children to learn!
