Platform for Display: PC Disc Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I think those first four words in the title are really essential to understand. I am definitely NOT a "pro". I am a guy who shoots a lot of "home movie" video, and likes to put it together in a DVD that can be played on any DVD player attached to a TV. That way I can distribute the discs to family members who want them, the "mementos" of family events, kids growing up, things like that.

For years I've been using Windows Movie Maker, which is very easy to use and gives me "professional" touches like title cards, disc menus, the ability to add a music soundtrack, etc. But I've tried a bunch of other programs over the years, looking for expanded capabilities.

Unfortunately, the ones I've tried were also difficult for me to learn and/or use, usually had capabilities I couldn't care less about while adding complexity, and just generally weren't for me.

I was very impressed with Pinnacle Studio 17. In "Author" mode, it was a snap to assemble my movie on a storyboard, including a disc menu; add voiceover and/or supplemental music tracks, came equipped with a bunch of freeware music tracks (as well as allowing you to import your own); and just generally was as easy as the Windows product, while adding a bit more technical capability. It was just what I've been looking for all these years.

In reading some of the other reviews, it seems many are dissatisfied with its limitations as a "pro" grade program. That very well may be; I'm really not one to make that call, because (as I said) that's not what I was looking for anyway.

But I suspect the vast majority of us are looking for something easy to use that will give us a "polished" look to our home movies, and if that's the case I can strongly recommend this software.

I don't think my movies are going to be playing on cable TV or in the theaters any time soon. Are yours? If not, you might want to take this software out for a spin.

Platform for Display: PC Disc Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This software failed to install on two computers (a desktop running Windows 7 Professional and a laptop running Windows 8.1).

Bottom line: Can't evaluate what can't be used...

In both cases, the installation routine reached a screen that indicated: "File: AVID.VFEditing.manifest". Once there: nothing happened.

The install failure under Windows 8.1 added this this inscrutable message:
"Error 1330. A file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file D;\Studio\Data1.cab has an invalid digital signature. This may indicate that the cabinet file is corrupt. Error 24592 was returned by WinVerify Tust."

In both cases, the optical drive was the "D" drive.

Both "Error 1330" and "Error 24592" show up in great quantities when searched online. Error 1330 is clearly Pinnacle-specific, and Error 24592 is associated with many applications across multiple Windows operating systems. In both of my cases, the issue came on machines with recent clean installs of their respective operating systems. For both error messages, you can find many possible solutions online, but no consensus is evident. Instead, I'll look for a different consumer-level video editor (and start with the free Windows Movie Maker...)

If ease is a priority, it is for you (or even easier, but less advanced Roxio Creator NXT 2). Pinnacle Studio 17 is lacking 3D editing, live screen capture, 24-track frame-accurate editing, key-framed effects control, simultaneous source, or timeline viewing, of much pricier Pinnacle Studio Plus 17, which is lacking a 4K Ultra HD video support, premium Red Giant plug-ins, Blu-ray authoring, or iZotope music & speech cleaner, of Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 17.

Its closest competitors are - one - slightly faster and more versatile PowerDirector, which additionally includes a version for tablets (weak CPUs), and - two - slower, but with superior organizational tools Adobe Premiere Elements/Touch - both slightly more difficult to learn, but superior in audio correction. Corel VideoStudio, Sony Movie Studio, and the video editors in Roxio Creator and Nero lag far behind Pinnacle Studios. The Elements were always much more difficult to learn, but the recent edition of the Guided editing mode made them a bit easier, but still behind Pinnacle Studios.

Its interface (looks) is attractive despite some less intuitive procedures. Pinnacle Studio leads in video effects. Video can be directly uploaded to Facebook, Box, YouTube, and Vimeo. Disk creation is supported by a wide range of menu templates. Video preview is fast on nVidia graphics cards with CUDA, but slower on AMD graphics cards without it. Still no multi-cam editing, motion tracking, or dynamic warping time of PowerDirector.

I have been using Pinnacle Studio for several years. I started with version 8 and have versions 9 ,11, 12, and now 17. the past versions of this software are much more user friendly that this current version. the designers have changed the interface and it is much harder to navigate. the product works OK, but having used the studio software for about 10 years and several versions I found it like starting all over again.

I can' help but wonder if the designers used to work for Microsoft and just feel they need to change things without making them better. I am still a fan of Pinnacle Studio and think it is a fine product. I just haven't found the improvements yet.
