I got Pinnacle Studio 11 when I started video editing and regretted it. But I had paid the money and I felt locked in. Then I jumped to Version 15 and found it OK, only slightly frustrating and pretty stable. Then an offer came to trade up to 17 -- faster rendering and "unlimited" video tracks. Since I capture events for our historical society, using two cameras and inserting stills, that feature appealed to me, so I paid more money and downloaded it.

Well, shock and horror! It's not an evolution of the old Studio, but a completely re-vamped app. I think what happened was that Corel bought Avid which had acquired Pinnacle and decided to standardize on the Avid software. (I had tried a free sample of that about a year ago and found it hopelessly unstable.)

The good news for Studio 17: it is stable enough. I have crashed it twice now, once by clicking on an icon to see what it did -- it gave a message saying that archiving would not work because the settings were wrong and then froze. That's terrible quality assurance right there, they never tested that sequence.

I imported a project started under Studio 15, it sort of worked but needed a lot of re-tuning to get it right.

The power of the old Studio is still there, but the new version is 90% icon driven, the main menus provide almost nothing in functional support. The other 10% is using a right click menu when appropriate. An example here: in the old Studio you split a track by doing a right click at the scrubber and selecting "Split clip" (or using one of the main menu items) -- in 17 there is only an icon for splitting. AND! there is no "Join clip" that I can see. I just tried doing a split and seeing if a second click on the icon would join, but it does not.

The absolute WORST software package I've ever bought! Where to start.... if you make the mistake of using Watchfolders with a large library of videos and pictures, it renders the program unusable. It's too slow to run. It doesn't handle video files shot from a camera very well at all. You can't add transitions to MPG1 files even though it says they support them. The audio on videos is garbled, sped up, not in sync with the video. Some of the transitions don't render. A video of over 7 or 8 minutes slows the application down to a crawl. Their support is nonexistant. I emailed their support group. It took 3 days for a response and a pitiful response at that. I responded back and it took another week for them to reply with a equally useless remedy. I haven't heard from them since. With no technical support, you're left with the forums on their site. These forums are manned by users not employed by Corel, so you get what Corel pays for. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PACKAGE. I work in the IT field and hold certifications from Microsoft and Cisco. My machine is relatively high performance and recently reloaded when I installed a new SSD drive, so if I'm having these kind of problems with the software I would imagine at least 90% of the population would have an even harder time.

I have used this basic product from its' original release as Pinnacle years ago. I purchased a retail version of Pinnacle Studio 17 ultimate on December the 4th 2013 rather than an upgrade from my Studio 16 Ultimate. I built a new computer and need to transfer the software to it and insure them that it was removed from the original computer. No way provided unless I pay them $19.95 for a one time support ticket. Most reliable companies allow at least 90 days support. This is your support for this product, for 14 days you have one support option after your purchase. You then can pay them $19.95 for a one time support ticket, or give them $29.95 for a one year support that allows you 3 support tickets. If you are a first time purchaser of video editing software, I would strongly suggest other software unless you can spend more for support than what the software cost.

Feb 2015 follow-up: Version 17 received 4 patches with varying degrees of success in fixing their issues. Version 18 was released and seems to at least allow me to get work done again. Several major improvements have been made according to the company.

Original review...

I have had a painful relationship with Studio ever since version 9. It has a lot of capabilities and is fairly easy to figure out how to use to make great videos. It just has a lot of problems actually executing a final product. 17 seems to be VERY BUGGY. I am currently reverting back to 16 to see if I can get two paying projects completed on time because 17 is killing me.

What is Studio's #1 Problem? it is only 32bit, still, regardless of any 64 bit labelling you see on the description or packaging. 32 bit designer, 32 bit render engine.

Don't believe the false labelling in the packaging and advertising. This program might be compatible with a 64 bit OS but it is limited to 2GB of ram for editing and rendering and then you get the low memory warning and you have to quit and then open it again. When you are working with a lot of hi-def content and multiple layers, you wind up doing this many times.

The program has a lot of capability built into it, but realistically it's only good for simple home movies. I have finally had an Intervention over this program and 17 will be the last version for me. Now to go learn how to use Nero, which is 64 bit and uses modern graphics manipulation sub-systems.

If you just make simple videos for school or home, you will probably be fine.

If you need something that can use multiple cores and all 16GB of the ram in your workstation, STEER CLEAR.
