Book Description

August 15, 2007 Motorbooks Workshop

Even before the heyday of Von Dutch and Big Daddy, the ultimate way to personalize your car or motorcycle was to lay some wicked lines on top of the paintwork. Done with a steady hand and an eye for style, pinstripes speak volumes. In How to Pinstripe, acclaimed veteran striper Alan Johnson teaches you everything you need to know to get started, to further your mastery of the form, or to simply understand how a good design comes together.

Following a primer on the history and evolution of pinstriping, this book launches into a step-by-step guide to the pinstriping process--from choosing paint and brushes that suit your style and abilities, to preparing surfaces, experimenting with symmetrical and asymmetrical designs, striping freehand, and using grids and patterns. While stressing the importance of finding your own style and having fun with the hobby, Johnson also explains the basics of color theory and unique considerations for antique and classic cars, hot rods and customs, and motorcycles.

For more advanced pinstripers, theres also tried-and-true advice on apprenticing and working car shows. Illustrated with color photography throughout, How to Pinstripe is the perfect source for beginners and veterans alike.

4.0 out of 5 stars Top book, go ahead, get it..., January 17, 2009
This review is from: How To Pinstripe (Motorbooks Workshop) (Paperback)
I already have several books about pinstriping, and I don't know why, I was not attracted to that book, when finally, I decided to ask Santa to get it for me..
Maaaaaaaaaaaan... it is in my opinion the best book so far, for people who are willing to actually pinstripe... other books will probably show more pictures, but way less explanations, here..?? how to, why, how, where, every thing is covered, in a "friendly" style... if you're into pinstriping, but still have some questions..?? this is an excellent book, I really have no regret at all... ok.. I have ONE regret.. as a beginner-pinstriper, I should have bought that book first... Thanks Al for sharing so much...

This is a great book for getting a well rounded knowledge of pinstriping. Great for beginners like me. The book answered all my questions and more. The author has been in the industry for over 30 years and knows all the tips and tricks. Also well organized. Covers equipment(brushes/paint), how to handle the brush, practice exercises, mixing the paint, building designs, and plenty of examples. Would recommend to anyone with an interest in learning pinstriping.
