Pinup Review,
This review is from: Pinup: The Illegitimate Art (Paperback)
The book had excellent drawings and pictures. I am really into pinup art and this made a great addition to my collection of books.

I like reading Silke's books because he convey's his enthusiasm for the subject matter and is honest about his own talents; in this case he got into an interesting art career associated with film but didn't start painting pinups until late into his career. This book gives good background but be aware most of the art is his, and he readily admits that it is amateurish, driven more by enthusiasm than talent. If you are looking to learn about the artists, though, he gives you all the names worth looking into, which you can research. If you know all the artists, this is more like hanging out with a buddy sharing an enthusiasm for a subject that is often thought of as a guilty pleasure (compared to fine art). So, I recommend this book as a fun read.

The cover is proably the best of this item. I found the text to rehash standard ideas. Best to buy a used version. Rikk

All of the Silke books have been enjoyable, but this one differes from the ones i have seen in that it is more his art than photos. Many of the other books have as many period photos. This one does not. Having said that, it is still an enjoyable book. Woth the cost of purchase for those that enjoy Jim Silke.

This book tells the story of Jim Silke and is very informative, but the quality of the art was less than expected. I have always enjoyed Jim's art and the book is a welcome addition to my collection of fantasy and pinup artists, but I think the publisher does not do the Art due justice.

Silkie is a rarity, as good a writer as he is an artist and photographer. A long-time devotee of the field, he was unabashedly pinup-centric before that was cool. His art in this volume is ample and beautiful. For example, for the past few years Silkie has been THE Vampirella artist, infusing new glamour and danger into a frequently-overdone character. The best part of the book to me is Silkie's text, where he "tells it like it is" as a veteran of the scene for many years. Kudos to him for this wonderful, fun book.
