Knives look good in the block, but performance is like a cheap set from Wal-mart,

Pinzon is an Amazon brand, so I thought I would get good value for my money, especially as the other 16 pc set has high ratings from many reviewers. But the knives that I got perform just like the cheap knives available off the shelf for ten bucks at your local discounter. In fact, I prefer my cheaper Faberware knife set that has lasted me 2 years with regular use as they are lighter than the Pinzon knives. These knives arrived not very sharp and the included sharpening tool failed to sharpen them enough to be used to finely chop my herbs or vegetables. I found myself reaching for my faithful Faberware chef's knife instead as it was taking so much longer to mince or cut with these heavy and not so sharp knives. Next I'll get a good knife sharpener and see if that does these knives any good.
Upate: Feb 2007. I bought a sharpening stone with oil at the local Home Depot and sharpened these knives. They are still too heavy for me and not so sharp. In fact, the sharpening stone did wonders for my old stamped out knives but not for these forged knives. For cutting vegetables I'd prefer lighter and thinner knives that slice through cleanly. The thick side of the blade on these knives is about 3 mm on the Chef's knife and while the weight of a thick blade is good for minicing...it does not help slicing at all. I would not touch my tomatoes or even zuchinni with these knives! Update: May 2007: Now this set is selling for under 15 bucks. I had bought it for 30 bucks and that was the reason for my higher expectations. This set is getting 5 stars for some reviewers now as the pirce finally matches the performance!

These knives are ok, definitely a good deal for the price. Mine arrived sharp, but after three months of use I've had to sharpen them. They look nice and have been an inexpensive replacement for the cheap-o knives I had been using.

Stunningly Bad,
This review is from: Pinzon 8-Piece Chef Knife Block Set
Fascinating that a product this incredibly bad made it to marketplace. Even after sharpening not one knife could cut a zucchini. You will get a sharper, more even, and certainly safer cut by using your teeth. Plastic cutlery would be a serious upgrade. Too dangerous to donate to charity, these Pinzons were sheetcanned with an invigorating disgust.

I bought this on sale for approx $15. I got what I paid for. This is the worst knife set I have ever owned. The only redeeming part of this set is the scissors. Don't waste your money as they won't hold an edge at all.

I have been searching for a good set of knifes in all the brick & mortar outlet places, and I finally found it online at Amazon Outlet. Great value and well made (in China). Aren't they all made in China nowadays and it looks pretty safe (no lead)!

These are very sturdy heavy knives, I like the look of them but they werent very sharp when I received them so we had to sharpen them. They are a good value for the amount I paid for them, once they were sharpened they are alot better than the department store junk I had before.
Edited to add - I have had these knives for over a year now, they still need sharpened more than I'd like and have now developed rust spots. I never wash them in the dishwasher, my suggestion is to immediately dry them and don't let them sit out to dry.

This was on special sale for $12 at Amazon, so it was an incredible value. No, it isn't as great as those $300 sets at Macys, but for a regular cook, they are fine and you can't beat that price!

An excellent knife block set for the price.,
This review is from: Pinzon 8-Piece Chef Knife Block Set
It could be true that it can't be compared to other high-priced knife block set in terms of quality. However, how excellent quality are you expecting for this low, low price set?
Let me be fair, it is excellent for my daily use, it is excellent for my money and it is excellent if you don't wanna pay extra, extra for a daily-use knife set. Last, I could this: it worth more than a set of a brand name if you don't wanna to pay or can't afford. I wanna recommend those buyers who love to complain about its quality but are not willing to pay extra: be real. |
