The Pioneer Air Jam App

Pioneer's Exclusive Air Jam App is Social Music Networking!

Available for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, Air Jam is an exclusive app available for free in the App Store that lets you and up to 3 of your friends connect your Apple devices via Bluetooth to share music or make playlists on your home theater through your network-capable Pioneer receiver. Can you say mash-up?

Funny. It Doesn't Sound Compressed

So now that your digital music is playing from your favorite portable devices on your home theater, what's it going to sound like? One of the real pains of using wireless solutions to connect portable devices to your home theater is the nature of compressed digital audio. MP3s and WMA files "shrink" the original music data in order to fit onto your portable device, which can mean a less than rich experience when they're played back on your home theater system.

Pioneer's solution is a custom technology called Sound Retriever AIR and is available on Pioneer's entire line of new receivers. Sound Retriever AIR restores parts of your digital music files so your digital music sounds much closer to what the original artist intended.

Portable music and a powerful home theater system used to require compromise. Not anymore.

Because Pioneer's manual is "teh suck," as the kids say, here's how you sync one of these with a VSX-921-K receiver (should work with "lower" models, i.e. VSX-821, but I haven't tested those, so proceed at your own risk):

1. Select "ADAPTER" with either the remote control or input knob (this is what the manual doesn't tell you).
2. Press SHIFT (bottom right-hand corner) on the remote and "TOP MENU" (left corner above the directional buttons in the middle of the remote) at the same time.
3. The numbers "0000" should appear in the receiver display. If you're happy with this as your Bluetooth PIN, press the ENTER button in the middle of the directional section of the remote. "0000" will start blinking. If you'd rather have a different PIN, the left or right arrow buttons will let you choose other pre-programmed PINs.
4. Whip out your iPhone or other Bluetooth smart phone and navigate to the Bluetooth sync page. Sync as you would any BT device.
5. Once the phone accepts the link, you should be able to play music (but apparently not video) on your phone via Bluetooth through the receiver.

I had to call Pioneer and stay on hold a half hour to get these instructions... hopefully you found them here first. Once the device is sync'd, it seems to work fine. A+ for technology, F for documentation...

When I bought my new shiny Pioneer VSX-1022-K 560W 7-Channel A/V Receiver, Network Ready, Pandora, iPod/iPhone, Black I pondered to purchase this Pioneer AS-BT200 Bluetooth Adapter for Compatible Pioneer Products, Black to be able to stream the music on my Samsung Nexus S Unlocked Phone--U.S. Warranty (Black) to the new stereo receiver - boy what a waste it would have been to keep it.

I read the manual of the receiver and I saw that it supports DLNA media streaming from a media server. There are apps (FREE!) for both, Android and iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod) which allow for the use of your mobile device to be used as a DNLA server - for Android one of the many apps is for example "DNLA Server" (simply search for it in the Google Play Store) or go here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0062THTMK/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0062THTMK&linkCode=as2&tag=unitedstatesp-20 and for iOS one of the many apps is Media:Connect (simply search for "DNLA" in the Apple App Store)

Using one of these apps makes, as long as you have a wireless network at home, this Bluetooth adapter completely unnecessary, because you can simply stream from your phone over the wireless network to the wired (or, if you have a WLAN adapter like

I bought this as it was specified for the receiver we have and because Pioneer (like many other manufacturers) uses proprietary connections and software that render generic products incompatible. Since that has nothing to do with the actual use of, or performance of the device, I did not take away a superior rating because of it.

***CONS***
I did take away one star because it increases the depth of the receiver by a full two inches. The adapter plugs perpendicularly into the backplane of every Pioneer receiver it was designed for. My cabinet is deep enough to accommodate this, but I handmade the cabinet with things like this in mind. At over 16 inches deep, this receiver is by and far the deepest component in our entertainment center. It just seems like the adapter does not have to be so large if you look at any selection of PC USB Bluetooth adapters on the market. And I have yet to see something as simple as an extension cable for placing this adapter in a convenient location. Combine this nuisance with the going price (I know, nobody forced me to purchase it), and there's room for improvement before I feel it deserves a superior rating.

***PROS***
That being said - we do enjoy the adapter tremendously. It provides a very quick and easy way to stream media (that looks and sounds fantastic) from a phone or tablet to the receiver. It works without skipping a beat every time, and it does what it's designed to do. I can't deny it less than 4 stars in this respect.

***BEFORE YOU BUY***
THAT being said - I would recommend reviewing your setup before making this purchase, because there are other options to produce the same functionality for less money.

I've used this product now for just over a week & it's working just fine. I'm using it with my newly purchased Pioneer VSX-1021 A/V receiver. Pairing was simple. I would definitely call this a plug & play product. I have my iPod Touch, Droid Incredible, iPad2 & my wife's iPhone4 all paired with it. It works fine on all of them. The sound quality is excellent as well. I walked away from the receiver into my kitchen (about 20+ feet away) with no signal loss. So, again, freeing my devices from a headphone jack to RCA's to listen to Pandora or my iPod's music is awesome. I'm going to run a CAT6 line to the receiver so I can take full advantage of the receiver's networking capabilities. So, in essence, the adapter is good if you don't have the network capability and want to be wireless. The only reason it's a 4 star rating is the price. I think Bluetooth technology is at a point that all Blue Tooth devices should be about $20 in my opinion. If any issues arise with this product, I'll be sure to repost. Thanks for reading.
