First of all there is a lot I really like about this thing, I am going to focus on the things I want to warn you about. If you are interested in using the AppRadio features (a big selling point for me) and you have an iPhone 5, 5c, or 5s, you will need a video connection along with the lightning/usb - either a VGA or HDMI cable PLUS an Apple VGA or Data AV to Lightning adapter. It will not work to just hook up to the USB.

The documentation about this is really, really bad. I read and figured out everything ahead of time to be sure I had it all installed correctly and didn't catch this issue until it was fully installed - now I have to pull it all out and reinstall with the extra 100.00 worth of stuff to make it do what it is supposed to. Infuriating.

On the upside, it's gorgeous, it sounds great, and the interface is intuitive and simple. But man...good luck figuring out what you actually need by reading the manual or going to the website. A joke. sincerely - the guinea pig

Pioneer swears up and down that the following is very clear from their manual. It isn't. Once you install the HDMI cable and hook up the Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter (or the similar setup using the VGA version) you will get a message on the screen that says "Incompatible USB". (The USB portion of the Apple adapter is charge-only, no data!) You need to go to Settings: Input/Output: Smartphone Settings: Connection: [change from USB to Digital AV or VGA]

The manual is pure crap in this regard - and also in the way that it describes the cables you need, using Pionner part numbers rather than just the type of cable. What you will need is the following.

This review is a little long but I think the radio deserves more than just a few lines. I had been looking for a new radio for my Ford F250 for several years but had not been happy with some of the reviews on most of the offerings. It just seemed there were a lot of bugs in the software or it just didn't have enough features built into the head unit or there wasn't a good or no interface between the radio and your cellphone.

I again started shopping around several months ago and was pleased to see that the big manufactures had released some new models for 2014 so I continued my quest for the perfect radio. I picked the Pioneer 8000NEX because of the full features you get and some overall good reviews I found. I had this radio installed at Best Buy after talking to the installer Johnny. I could tell he had been doing this for many years and seemed to know his stuff. I was correct, Johnny did a great job.

I can say that after almost a month with the radio it was the right one for me. I have never purchased a radio like this and the only thing I can compare it to is the factory radio in my 2011 E350. Although the factory radio is good, the Pioneer is more flexible. I looked at several other manufactures radios focusing on the Garmin maps but honestly the HERE maps that Pioneer uses are very good and as capable as the Garmin maps. They actually look cleaner in my humble opinion. Don't want to knock Garmin, I've used them for many years and they are great systems but don't let the lack of Garmin maps drive you away from Pioneer.

The overall experience with the 8000 has been a good one. The sound is so much better than the stock radio. I didn't opt for an amp or subwoofer but I really don't think I need that. I did replace the front and rear speakers with some Pioneers.

Update: I just upgraded to the newest firmware which includes Apple CarPlay support and it's awesome! One thing to keep in mind. It only works with the USB cable in slot 1. If you use USB slot 2 or HDMI it would not work!

I highly recommend this navigation unit. I upgraded from a previous Pioneer navigation unit Z130-BT and I find this receiver having much welcomed features. The best feature I like is the speed limit alert! I'm sure it's going to save me hundreds of dollars in traffic tickets. I set it on 110% of speed limit and it knows the speed limit of where I am driving and it alerts me with voice if I'm exceeding the threshold. Another feature I didn't have in the Z130-BT is the fact that this unit has sunset and sunrise times programmed for each coordinate so it can switch to night mode automatically after sunset. In the previous unit I had to manually keep changing the brightness of the screen which was frustrating. As for the complaints about compatibility with iPhone. I think it's mostly from people who don't seem to know how it all works. Yes the Pioneer applications are not the best but Bluetooth and Siri integration work great. It almost never misunderstands my commands. I can ask it to read my email, read and reply to text messages and more all from a button on the unit itself without touching my iPhone. I installed both all cabled: HDMI, USB and even Auxiliary.
The HDMI allows you to mirror the iPhone on the screen (only when it's parked, unless of course you install the hand break bypass). The USB cable gives more control to the Music apps for rewind and going to next song for example. I had a professional shop install it with the new satellite receiver and steering wheel control (old interface worked).
There are couple of things that I consider annoying.
