The drive is very quiet when operating.

All my drive-interactive programs worked well with this drive, both native MAC programs and Windows 7 programs running in VMware.

The drive reads and writes with no problem, playing blu-ray movies is smooth and quiet.

I purchased this drive a couple days ago and installed it today. Installation was smooth and Windows 7 recognized the drive no problem. The drive is very quiet when operating. This drive does not come with software so if you plan to watch Blu-ray movies you will either need software already installed or you will need to purchase software. As it turns out the software for playing Blu-ray movies is going to cost upwards of $50 and maybe more. Options seem to be Cyberlink PowerDVD and Corel WinDVD.

The drive does what it is supposed to do and has performed flawlessly the few times I have used it, I Use PavTubes Blu-ray ripper and it works fine for ripping my BD movies to my HD.

Even though description of the product CLEARLY states no software, you have to weigh this further and consider your needs?- there are a host of Free software that can assist in ripping/decrypting BluRay Discs to your HD, programs like MakeMKV, Handbrake etc and for burning Data to a BluRay you have more choices e.g Burnaware.

Even for playing BluRay discs back DIRECTLY from the drive, you will need a software again, the best is probably Cyberlink's Power DVD 11 Ultra, though there are many others like WinDVD Pro 11 or TotalMedia Theatre 5 but all of these come at an expense from $30- $90, There are free ones, most notably DAPLAYER from Digiarty.com is pretty good.

Hope this helps

With the cost of Blu-ray finally beginning to come down. This burner is a perfect fit. It works with all the new media where as my LG did not......LG is running at a turtles pace with their up-dates......I highly recomend this product.....You can back up a lot of data on a 50gb Dual Layer disc....It also works well with DVD's too......

With Blu-ray blank disc price finally coming down it was time for me to start stock up my blu-ray movies instead of DVD, I wanted to make sure I can make copy of my discs suceffully before buying one so I read many reviews before purchasing this one. I bought a Vantec external enclosure so I can plug it in any of my computers and it works perfectly! I can't believe the drive is so quiet that I can't tell if it was running if it wasn't for the green light kept flashing.

I'm giving it 4 stars because it has trouble reading a disc that played flawlessly with my Sony player, it always stuck at the same chapter, which I have no idea why since the program that I use didn't encounter any protection warning issue.

It burnt Optical Quantum 1-4X discs without any problem, highly recommended.

A fine Blu-Ray burner. It arrives "bare" - no cables, screws, or software - but I needed none of those for my particular install. It installed easily, and I used ImgBurn to burn 24GB of data in less than 11 minutes to standard Verbatim 6x Blu-ray media (e.g. Verbatim 97238 25 GB 6x Blu-ray Single Layer Recordable Disc BD-R, 10-Disc Spindle), with the speed peaking out at 12x at the end of the burn just as advertised. (I highly recommend ImgBurn, it is free software, and works much better than Windows Explorer for burning discs.) The Pioneer is much quieter than the Lite-On DVD burner that it replaced, and the much greater storage capacity is certainly welcome. I will also be using it to burn Blu-ray videos edited in Sony Vegas.

This item arrived as a typical OEM unit, with no software, no instructions, no screws. First, installed free VLC software from Internet. Then installed the unit. The door would open and close. Inserted a Blu Ray disc into it, and it did nothing. Then, put a DVD into it, and the same thing...nothing. Then went to the Pioneer site. There was an update for this model, so downloaded it and then ran it. After several seconds, a message came up which read, "unit failed to move to normal mode". After that, the unit door would not open, and the unit was stone dead...

So, then asked for a replacement. Amazon sent one immediately, with an apology.(!)
Unfortunately, the exact same thing; "unit failed to move to normal mode" happened again, so returned both units.

Next, purchased an LG WH12LS38 Blu Ray 3D model. It came with screws, power and SATA wires, and a free copy of Cyberlink PowerDVD 9. That stuff all worked just fine.

If you have an old external DVD enclosure, this is an easy install. I took a old Lacie firewire enclosure and installed this drive with just a few screws. Price of a new Lacie Blu-Ray $400... you can do the rest of the math. Has worked flawlessly for over a year now as I've digitized my Blu-Ray collection.
