I installed this dual-zone unit along with a four-zone unit and a single-zone, 110-volt unit to control the climate inside a house on Washington's Pacific coast. The installation was uneventful, and my installer had no problems with any of the components or the instructions.

We had some difficulty getting the system started. Apparently the shipment was jostled a bit during transit, shaking some of the connections loose and keeping it from starting normally. The staff at HighSEER was very helpful in resolving our problems, but the three-hour time differential between the installation and the distributor made communication slow.

A competent DIYer could install the two control heads, but running the 230-volt electrical power and charging the refrigerant lines require more knowledge and equipment than most competent DIYers have on hand. Installation requires drilling two three-inch holes in an outside wall, and I wasn't quite ready to do that myself, so I had the installer do the whole job.

I gave the product four stars on the assumption that everything will work properly when we get the startup kinks worked out. It's established technology, so it should. Look for an update around October 10.

October 12 Update: We're still having some problems with the control logic on the second control head. As long as I have only the primary head working, operation is perfect. When I turn the second head on, it runs for half an hour and then the whole system shuts down on compressor overheat. The HighSEER staff sent me a detailed technical manual, so we have a detailed troubleshooting flowchart to follow, but the going is slow. I'm still rating it four stars on the assumption that we'll eventually get this problem worked out. More later.

Package arrived OK from the shipper, Amazon/Pioneer did a good job of getting the item out quickly. One hiccup was the adapter for condenser/compressor unit was missing the seal. This was not discovered until the A/C technician went to do the install of the unit. The adapter was loose in the box (indoor unit) but was in the bag of the other unit. The one with the loose adapter did not have tears or holes in the bag so I'm not sure what happened. I'm hoping the A/C tech can cut and re flare the tubing to match the outdoor connections or they have a copper seal/washer. Unit so far was easy to install (not much going on here.) You do need a chase, sold here at Amazon, and some place to mount the condenser/compressor. I went with the wall bracket option and they seem sturdy. If we can resolve the copper washer/seal issue then I'll update my review.

UPDATE:
After I sourced the missing copper gasket from Granger (cheap part, 3/8" copper gasket) then the installer could do the install with out issues. The hookups for the gauges are only on the liquid/high pressure side. My installer installed standard taps on the lines to facilitate the hookup of standard gauges on both the vapor/low and liquid/high pressure sides. The installer then used two vacuum pumps to pull a deep vacuum then purged the system with nitrogen and let it sit overnight to check for leaks. The next day he pulled the vacuum again for 45 minutes and verified the vacuum level with a vacrometer. The product seems quite efficient in comparison to the noisy window unit it replaced in one room. Operating two heads at low compressor speed (as indicated on the display) pulls only 1KW of power. In relationship, the window unit cooling one room pulled 900W of power. Even when this is operating at full blast, the outdoor and indoor units are quiet.

Concerned consumer. These types of units are great when they work, but i have found that there are some questions that should have been asked before purchasing. - Find out if proof of a licensed hvac tech has to be involved in your installation for your warranty to be valid? If trouble occurs who is going to do the repairs? Can you find an hvac tech that will work on the unit if you did not buy it from their company? How much will they charge per hour? Be careful of the copper as it can easily kink or twist inside the foam and you will not see the problem. Have to love the price.
