This radio does all it claims to do and does it well. However, like most of the new aftermarket auto receivers that are menu driven, it is not intuitive in its control system. You have to read the manual carefully and fully. The buttons are small and require you to look at it to control it, thus adding an element of "driving while distracted". In my opinion a larger unit with larger buttons and knobs that can be controlled without having to take your eyes off the road is desirable. Perhaps the OEM makers have a better handle on ergonomics, or the desire to avoid lawsuits.
After writing this, I discovered the many YouTube instructional videos on how to operate this unit. I can't recommend viewing them enough. The manual that come with this is confusing and printed in such a small font, heaven forbid you are over the age of 50 and trying to read it. I actually copied it and enlarged it to be able to try and read it. The videos however, explain the unit's operation clearly.
However, after almost a year of using it, I still am very impressed with its performance, for its price point. I am considering adding a small subwoofer unit to increase the loudspeakers' Bass performance to match the units output potential.

I did my research and found that Pioneer provided top quality and reasonable prices. I reviewed several "review" websites and found that other people who purchased this unit were happy with the item. I also checked four other online retailers for prices and Amazon.com was by far the lowest price on this car stereo system.

I had a friend who works for a local car audio system installer and he was able to install this unit in my 2002 Dodge Dakota truck in about 20 minutes. He had all the necessary mounting and connection equipment.

The Pioneer DEH-X5500HD is awesome! It's fairly easy to use and provides excellent sound, even with stock speakers. The only down side is that the enclosed User Manual is hard to read...very small text and in many spots is "gray" in color, making it hard to see. I download a PDF file of the User Manual and found it much easier to read.

If the written instructions are hard to read or follow, be sure to go to the Pioneer website. They have several videos to assist on getting to know the unit and how to change system setting, setting radio stations, changing the color and audio output. Short and very informative videos!

UPDATE (3/24/13): I've had this sound system now for two weeks. After some setup and fine turning the settings, I've really been enjoying the features. I generally don't listen to local radio stations while I drive...just to much junk music being played and there is no local FM Smooth Jazz Channel, which is what I prefer. So having the ability to play my favorite music from my 160 GB iPod is GREAT.

Wanted it mostly for its ability to accept external audio sources but it gets confused when you plug in a non-Apple product, i.e. a cell phone, when you just want to charge it. Didn't want or use the CD player.

The main knob looks nice but is too shallow and smooth to grasp and operate properly. I'd like to see it protrude further and have a textured border. Other reviewers mentioned the tiny buttons and I'd tend to agree with their assessments. The HD radio is nice and the RDS station/song identification is great too but if a station doesn't broadcast the extra signal the Pioneer unit just shows "NO TEXT". Who cares? It blinks this at you incessantly, why not show the time instead? Right now I have to turn it off to see the time...urgh.

I bought the Pioneer DEH-X5500HD at a local Best Buy after calling to price match it to Amazon. I didn't want to wait for shipping. I looked at the reviews for this product for two days. I watched every video on the Pioneer website and even compared it to a lower model as well as products from Kenwood. I will say that I was very happy with my last Pioneer so I wanted to remain loyal, but I would have chosen otherwise if I could have been convinced. I wanted the HD radio, the USB drive, and the front AUX port, as well as the old standby, CD. I also wanted something a little higher end. I looked at the DEH-4400HD and compared. Compared to that radio this one has easier navigation, the people complaining about it apparently haven't watched the videos. It has better text, more audio customizing options, better button setup, and it has MixTrax. A new pioneer invention that will DJ itself as well as giving you the options of a light show, mixing and fading tracks, and arranging songs based on BeatsPerMinute as long as they are on a USB drive or an Ipod. I have a Galaxy S3 so I can't use the features such as Pandora via USB but I like the option. I will update this review if any of the things I discovered today during my 30 minute test drive change. Installation was simple, it is no more difficult than the only other one I did. Buy a wiring harness for your vehicle and some electrical tape. Connect all the wires color by color. If your wiring harness has a solid blue wire connect it to the system remote wire (blue/white). Upon installation I could immediately hear the difference in audio quality, and I already had a Pioneer before, the deh-p4800mp to be specific. I recommend this radio. To be honest I recommend this radio enough to be writing my first review ever at 4 am when I have to be up in 4 hours.Read more ›
