After writing this, I discovered the many YouTube instructional videos on how to operate this unit. I can't recommend viewing them enough. The manual that come with this is confusing and printed in such a small font, heaven forbid you are over the age of 50 and trying to read it. I actually copied it and enlarged it to be able to try and read it. The videos however, explain the unit's operation clearly.
However, after almost a year of using it, I still am very impressed with its performance, for its price point. I am considering adding a small subwoofer unit to increase the loudspeakers' Bass performance to match the units output potential.
I had a friend who works for a local car audio system installer and he was able to install this unit in my 2002 Dodge Dakota truck in about 20 minutes. He had all the necessary mounting and connection equipment.
The Pioneer DEH-X5500HD is awesome! It's fairly easy to use and provides excellent sound, even with stock speakers. The only down side is that the enclosed User Manual is hard to read...very small text and in many spots is "gray" in color, making it hard to see. I download a PDF file of the User Manual and found it much easier to read.
If the written instructions are hard to read or follow, be sure to go to the Pioneer website. They have several videos to assist on getting to know the unit and how to change system setting, setting radio stations, changing the color and audio output. Short and very informative videos!
UPDATE (3/24/13): I've had this sound system now for two weeks. After some setup and fine turning the settings, I've really been enjoying the features. I generally don't listen to local radio stations while I drive...just to much junk music being played and there is no local FM Smooth Jazz Channel, which is what I prefer. So having the ability to play my favorite music from my 160 GB iPod is GREAT.Read more ›
The main knob looks nice but is too shallow and smooth to grasp and operate properly. I'd like to see it protrude further and have a textured border. Other reviewers mentioned the tiny buttons and I'd tend to agree with their assessments. The HD radio is nice and the RDS station/song identification is great too but if a station doesn't broadcast the extra signal the Pioneer unit just shows "NO TEXT". Who cares? It blinks this at you incessantly, why not show the time instead? Right now I have to turn it off to see the time...urgh.
