1.0 out of 5 stars WARNING: Does NOT play Japanese DVDs
I checked the reviews for this product and was excited to purchase it because it seemed to do everything I wanted it to do. 4.0 out of 5 stars Good DVD player, November 18, 2009
This review is from: Pioneer DV-120K-K Region Free DVD Player with USB - Karaoke - and DivX playback (Electronics)
I bought this DVD player this week and its quite sleek and plays all those DVDs which were not playable on my samsung DVD player...so very happy about the performance. The only draw back is that it doesnt have HDMI but connected it with the component output cables. Picture is crisp and sound quality is good...controls are easy except that the batteries seem to be a loose fit in the remote so make a rattling sound. I have yet to try out the Karaoke, USB and CD ripping functions..will discover it at my leisure. For now, im quite satisfied with the output.

Cheers

1.0 out of 5 stars WARNING: Does NOT play Japanese DVDs, April 4, 2010

This review is from: Pioneer DV-120K-K Region Free DVD Player with USB - Karaoke - and DivX playback (Electronics)
I checked the reviews for this product and was excited to purchase it because it seemed to do everything I wanted it to do. Setting it up was easy and the DVD player itself looked sleek and attractive. I popped in a Japanese DVD to test it for about a minute and it seemed to work just fine. However, when it came time to actually WATCH the Japanese DVD, the disc would inexplicably pause randomly and the remote control would become unresponsive. This happened every few minutes when playing the Japanese DVD. The screen would literally freeze with no sound. I then put another Japanese DVD in the machine to see if there was a disc problem, but the same random pausing happened again. This product might be advertised as being able to play DVDs from all over the world, but that might not be entirely accurate.

When packing up this DVD player to send back to the seller, I saw an interesting warning on the box. It says in English and Japanese: "NOTICE FOR FOREIGN TOURISTS IN JAPAN: THIS PRODUCT IS NOT FOR USE IN JAPAN." I don't know if that means it won't play Japanese DVDs or if there's a voltage issue that will prevent the DVD player from working properly.

I was very disappointed with this purchase. I don't know if I got a defective product or if this DVD player really is not "region free" despite its advertising.

i ordered this dvd player because it was a pioneer, region free and priced well. i was slightly skeptical when i first opened the box there was a symbol for region 4 on the box. but it really does play dvds from all regions, no problems so far ( i'm playing mostly regions 2 and 1 ). the picture and sound quality are excellent as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars GOOD DVD PLAYER BUT NO HDMI AND NOT CD+G KARAOKE, January 31, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Pioneer DV-120K-K Region Free DVD Player with USB - Karaoke - and DivX playback (Electronics)
This pioneer DVD player is nice. It works great and has features that I like. I am a mobile VJ and keep 2 of these for backup. The screen has a red display and looks different. It will play many formats including DVD karaoke but not CD+G karaoke. It has a mic input with echo that is controlled on the remote. It has composite and component outputs but not HDMI and the power cord is detachable. **One great feature is the defeatable screen icons, meaning you can turn off ALL screen visuals so when you press play, pause etc, it will not display on the screen. This is very important for mobile VJ use. It does show "PIONEER" on the screen when not in use and you cannot turn that off.

Overall a nice player for the price but no HDMI output. This is the only non-professional player that I have found that has defeatable screen icons, so its great for VJ use.

1.0 out of 5 stars Region Free?, July 17, 2010

This item suddenly stopped working after 4 months bought in new condition.
We had been enjoying region 1 & 2 DVDs till yesterday, but the machine suddenly stopped taking DVDs and started showing the message "Incompartible disc region number Can't play disc" on any DVDs which we used to play with no problems.
And also we have noticed a symbol of region 4 on the back panel of this machine. What does it mean? It was able to play region 1&2 many times, and suddenly stopped working...then the mark shows "region 4"???? How tricky it was!
Is this region free DVD player or NO?
Please do not trick us decent customer who simply wanted to enjoy region 1 & 2 DVDs.

This DVD player is not fancy, but it is worth the price. I was also worried about the Region 4 on the back, but it does play DVDs from other regions. I was disappointed to find that it is NOT HDMI CAPABLE. I don't know why it suggests that you buy the player and the HDMI cables together. You just have to use the video cables. I would recommend buying the Pioneer DV-220ke if you want the HDMI. The picture and sound quality are quite good.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pioneer DV-120k-k Region Free... when it works..., May 23, 2011

This review is from: Pioneer DV-120K-K Region Free DVD Player with USB - Karaoke - and DivX playback (Electronics)
Im living in america after moving from australia and i was looking for a DVD player that would play my aussie DVD's here in the US.
It was difficult to find a PAL/NTSC player, so when i did i was super excited...

I bought this in July 2010 and for 6 months it did actually play quite well.
Then all of a sudden i got the message:

"Incompatible disc region number Can't play disc"

So i looked online for any kind of support, low and behold Pioneer doesnt support this system. No firmware updates etc.
I get that its a cheap player, but its still a pain to know this issue is happening to alot of people and there isnt a simple firmware upgrade on pioneers website.

The ironic thing is, it wont even play American discs now. It doesnt recognise any regions. So its completely useless.

I gave it a 1 star because i can no longer use it and need to replace it. Otherwise it wasnt bad... when it worked...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Anglophiles, October 22, 2010

This review is from: Pioneer DV-120K-K Region Free DVD Player with USB - Karaoke - and DivX playback (Electronics)
This region-free DVD player is one of the best electronic purchases I've ever made. Set-up in minutes, and works like a charm. Can't beat it for ease of installation and use. For someone who is easily frustrated with complicated instruction manuals and the overly-complicated set-up and programming of many electronic devices, this was a dream. Open the box, plug in 2 wires (didn't even need the wires enclosed, the wires already coming out of my current TV and existing DVD player just fit right in), turn it on, and go.

I bought it because many Brit TV shows and films that were never released in the US are also not released on region 1 DVD, which I find very frustrating. While BBC America is wasting our time with Star Trek (!), thanks to this DVD player, and an account with Amazon UK, I can now watch great UK TV shows like Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Spender, and the new version of Reggie Perrin, starring Martin Clunes. I haven't even BEGUN to explore what else is out there, but I will NEVER buy a region 1 DVD player again. I will ALWAYS purchase region-free, and recommend that everyone do the same!

DVD player really does play multiregion DVDs - we've used it for US, UK and Australian region discs and it works great. Includes AV composite cable and batteries for the remote!
