5.0 out of 5 stars great product
I just bought this dvd recorder after days of research. I read many reviews on Toshiba and Panasonic models.
I paid 229USD plus shipping and taxes in CA.
The unit came with two DVDs, FujiFilm DVD-R and DVD-RW. It is well designed and easy to use. It has inputs in the front and back. Firewire in the front on the right side and the L2 input with RCAs and S-Video...

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor choice for playing back prerecorded DVDs
I'm sure this is a great *recorder* but I'm returning it because it's a substandard *player* or prerecorded discs. I'm posting this note just as an FYI for anyone who might be considering using this primarily for playback.

Prerecorded movies did not look good on my new 40" LCD flat panel. Even using the component video output, "The Lord of the Rings"...

Firewire in the front on the right side and the L2 input with RCAs and S-Video on the left side. In the back there couple more RCA/S-Video combinations. Plus, digital audio inputs.
I did my burn and it went so smooth. I put the same DVD into my Toshiba player and I was very happy with the results. My 12 years old Hi8 tape were on DVD playing on my DVD player. Plus, this unit is also a very good progressive scan player. It is nicely designed with good quality. The bottons and the turn knob is very nice, it feels like a heavy design professinal box. It is heaver than the regular DVD player as well. I has so many features it will take some to figure them out. But I know that I read about the standby recording mode that may help me a lot. It just waits for the signal to come in from AV source to start recording. So you do not have to miss any frame in the beginning. Plus, it may help me on Tivo recordings.
So, rushed to get the same DVD format to Fry's electronics. I thought I found the same FujiFilm DVD-R/RWs, I came home and saw that the originals were 4x, and the new ones were upto 8x speed. I started to worry again but it did not give me any problems. I finished couple more recordings and finalize them. Plus, FujiFilm DVDs were everywhere in the store, so I was happy again to easily find the DVDs that pioneer came with.
So far so good. The unit recognizes the DVDs very fast and finalize them very fast. I have no problems so far. I recommend this unit. I will write more reviews ones I read the editing section in the documentation and use them.
If you are looking for a good unit I think this is it.

I'm sure this is a great *recorder* but I'm returning it because it's a substandard *player* or prerecorded discs. I'm posting this note just as an FYI for anyone who might be considering using this primarily for playback.

Prerecorded movies did not look good on my new 40" LCD flat panel. Even using the component video output, "The Lord of the Rings" appeared blurry and there were too many "jaggies" even when I adjusted the progressive scan playback settings. Worst of all, it couldn't seem to output in the right aspect ratio, so everything appeared squashed. (After a few hours of playing with the aspect ratio settings on both the player and the TV, I was able to get the image close to normal, but it was still slightly squished). Anyway, I returned this and got an "upscaling" DVD payer with an HDMI output and WOW it looks a whole lot better now. It was only $100, but of course it can't record.

3.0 out of 5 stars Harmed by rather poor compression, April 22, 2005
This review is from: Pioneer DVR-330S PAL NTSC CODE FREE DVD Recorder Player (Electronics)
I find that the quality of capture off of the tuner [at all time lengths] is inferior to the Panasonic that I had previously. The machine has, however, been very reliable compared to that unit (which failed just outside a year and was very finicky about media).
