If you hate to watch TV commercials, and want to watch a movie/sports event/documentary from the beginning while you are still taping the end ("chase play"), this is for you. Connected directly to cable input from the wall, you can record hours (and days) of shows to the hard drive from different channels while you are away (my VCR couldn't do this) - then save to DVD anything you want to keep (or erase anything not worth saving)....all without messing with video tape. You can watch things like golf tournaments and slow the playback to a frame at a time to see what's happening in a golf swing. The controller has a commercial skip function in 30 sec. segments - or with a little effort, you can edit out commercials permanently. It also can copy video tapes to DVD (and allows you to edit them), and has a digital camera input (IEEE 1394) on the front of the machine. The machine is complex - because it can do a great deal of things - so it requires some time to get up to speed on all its capabilities....but is worth the investment.

I've spent a lot of time with DVD Recorders mostly Panasonic models. I was skeptical at first of this PIONEER brand dvr-510h-s as I have never owned any PIONEER brand electronics. However, I was very pleasantly surprised at the ease of which I was able to record TV and dubb older VHS to DVD with this DVR. I found the Panasonic DMR series to work fine. But as they always seem to be temperamental. They can skip, stall, or just simply reject both blank media discs and commercial movie discs. I never had this issue at all with this PIONEER DVR.

It has all the LINE IN connections necessary to hook-up either Cable, Satellite, or standard TV with RF antenna IN. It also has Component IN, S-VIDEO in and out, and Audio Video 3 Prong RCA Cables. It was effortless to connect it to my high end JVC VCR via S-Video out from the VCR. All functions worked perfectly on the first attempt. I never had any recording or playing issues with this machine.

The Hard Disk built in HDD has plenty of storage space to Record LIVE TV instantly. Its a quick on the fly switch from DVD to HDD Hard Disk. So you can juggle between what is on disc and what has been recorded to the internal storage hard disk.

The other main issue one should look at is the FORMAT DISC Menu options. Here I feel the PIONEER could of been improved on. Not sure why the most standard necessary format functions are buried deep into the menu options. This is only slightly annoying considering how improperly designed most MENU SCREENS for DVD Disc Formatting on DVR's are. The PANASONIC DMR-EZ27 is also both counter intuitive and poorly laid out. Difficult to navigate and tedious to "title" the disc with the ALPHA keyboard shown on screen and accessed via the remotes up down buttons only.
