Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The DVR-A07XL is Pioneer's first 8x8 dual format writer, meaning it is capable of writing at 8x speed on DVD-R discs whose standard is being ratified in the DVD Forum and +R discs that are designed for this recording speed. The new drive also records high-speed DVD-RW and +RW discs at up to 4x speed, and CD-R and CD-RW discs at up to 24x speed.

Pioneer engineers focused on improving the writing/recording quality and reliability for high-speed writing. New technology accommodates for variances in blank media. Some of the technological advancements include:

  • Quiet Drive technolgoy which reduces the operating noise by about 75 percent.
  • Pioneer-developed Liquid Crystal Control System for precise recording onto the surface of discs that may be warped or of uneven thickness.
  • Smart Laser Driver to provide a precise laser pulse control and achieve more reliable recording for high-speed writing.
  • Precision Recording Technology, which utilizes an auto-adjustable writing technique to enable recording under the best conditions for each disc characteristic at all times. This technology, first introduced in the DVR-A06, enables the DVR-A07 to achieve optimal initial writing performance and helps to minimize the normal deterioration of re-recordable discs due to repeated writing. As a result, the quality for repeatedly used DVD-RW discs is up to 10 times better than previous writers.
  • A Defect Management System that enhances the writing reliability further, while maintaining read compatibility with other DVD-ROM drives, DVD players and DVD recorders.
  • An Ultra Dynamic Resonance Absorber that reduces vibrations that can affect performance during high-speed recording and playback of some discs. With this feature, the high precision servo system remains stable during both high-speed recording and playback.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have no complaints with this drive, August 29, 2004

This review is from: Pioneer DVR A07XLB - Disk drive - DVD?RW - IDE - internal - 5.25" - black (Electronics)
It was high time I backed up all my data and I was not about to sit through the massive amount of time it would take to do it on CDs. A friend of mine bought a 4x burner, but even that seemed too slow for my taste, so I decided I had to go with the 8x.

I have had good experiences with pioneer products in the past, so I stuck with them. The price was right and it looks better with my case than a beige one would anyway.

So far I have not burned any coasters. Granted I have not made tons of discs with it yet, but so far so good. The only odd thing I noticed was that even though I used 8x media, I could not select an 8x writing speed. Despite this, it seemed to burn a lot faster for a full DVD of data than my friend's 4x did. Keeping that in mind, I'm not bothered.

As of yet there is only one disc that this drive has not been able to read. The CD looked ok, but none of my other drives could read it either, so I don't think it's a problem with the Pioneer drive.

I already had burner software, so I cannot speak for the quality of the application provided.
All in all I'd say this drive is a good deal.

2.0 out of 5 stars Picky and noisy, July 1, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Pioneer DVR A07XLB - Disk drive - DVD?RW - IDE - internal - 5.25" - black (Electronics)
This drive would have been perfect if not for it being picky when it comes to media. When playing dvds, its so loud, it overpowers the noise in my cpu. Its distracting.

The only good thing about this drive is that its cheap. But that is all you can get. Its a cheap writer which is cheaply constructed. I guess I got what I paid for. for others looking to buy this thing, spend just a little more on better known brands in dvd writers. Yes, Pioneer are famous but not when it comes to writers. There are others out there worth considering. But for the price no writer beats it except mayber for the "ultra-cheap all the way" NEC.

Other writers worth mentioning are Plextor and TDK which are admittedly more expensive than the Pioneers.
