4.0 out of 5 stars Actually, these are tracks by The Almanac Singers..., May 16, 2004
This review is from: Pioneer of Folk (Audio CD)
Although Pete does sing lead on most of these songs, most of these performances are from 1940-42, done by The Almanac Singers, which included Lee Hays, and Woody Guthrie and half-a-dozen other NYC leftists. Historically, these recordings are vital for fans of the "modern" American folk music scene. However, I think if you will look up the Almanacs on Amazon, you'll find the compilation "Songs of Protest" to be available at a good price, with a more complete representation of what the Almanacs were all about in their short career. The sound quality on that CD is excellent, considering the age of the source material. There is no real dispute that Pete was the lead singer and best instrumentalist in the group at the time, while Woody's contributions as a songwriter were essential, and Lee Hays' deep voice and knowledge of traditional songs was a wonderful asset. Buy this disc if you can't get the Almanacs release, but if you can find the other one, you should grab it first.
