i bought this for my AVIC-D3 with the intention to upgrade to the new F90, once i got around to it. It comes with everything required, 2 power connectors and the i-bus cable. as i already had the sirius module(xm one on its way!) i just tapped into the power cables from the sirus module and chained in the ibus. it took in total about 10 minutes. 2 words of warning, 1) if you want to still use the standard FM and AM tuners of the head unit, you will require an antenna splitter. 2)if you have the module displayed on the head unit, but no sound, you have put the i-bus cables in the wrong way round!
Finally, i have upgraded to the AVIC-F90BT and this gives a much better user interface to the HD radio. With the AVIC-D3, you only get the EXT1 interface but with the F90 you get the same interface as standard FM, just a small observation, but i liked it a lot more. Fuctionality wise, there is no difference between the D3 or the F90BT

The built in analog tuner is less sensitive than the tuner in the base radio, so I lose sensitivity in order to gain HD. I have tried the splitter so I can take advantage of the analog tuner and the HD tuner at the same time, and the analog tuner does not work while the HD is plugged in to the deck.
HD tuner is not as sensitive as the tuner in my older JVC HDR1. HD2 and HD3 stations that came in fine with the JVC do not come in as well with the this unit. If I didn't have the JVC I might be satisfied, but since I know there is better I was definitely let down. The install is straight forward, and it works, but unless you NEED HD I would skip this add on, or get a JVC Deck with the HD built in to the Deck.

I bought this unit to work with my DEH-P7000BT. And work it does! Do not use the antenna extender cable, it will "kill" your sensitivity, just plug the antenna lead into the adapter. I velcroed the box right behind the Head Unit on the firewall. Installation was a 5 minute deal. I live in the Chicago area so it really helps give me a lot of variety in "free" programming. The HD sounds fabulous and the digital AM stations sound good too.

I bought this to use with my Pioneer AVIC-D3 navigation. It works as advertised, as an external device so it is not perfect, but is easily usable from the AVIC touchscreen. The presets are stored by number only for reference but you cannot store a HD2 station. If you do it tunes to the HD1 station and you have to tune up manually to HD2. The HD station quality is noticeably better than standard FM and when you tune it first plays FM then switches to HD in a few seconds. The digital text broadcast is only 8 characters but is usable. If you listen to a lot of FM radio and want to get extra HD stations then you'll need a HD tuner. This is a good solution for adding that to your existing radio. I'd like to see it at a lower price however.

disclaimer: I was only looking for a tuner that would do a decent job pulling in the HD signal on a single station, and I don't use the interface much. Also, I paid 90 bucks and got 50 back from the MIR. The user interface depends entirely on the HU you use with this device.
I found it a bit frustrating that although my HU (880prs) was listed as compatible, it doesn't work like any of the others, and it doesn't work like the docs say it does for that category of HU. When I called pioneer for support, they didn't have much to offer, but did help a bit. Presets don't work the way the docs say they do, and I had to figure that out myself. The function menu headings don't have any descriptions and titles are 'function1, function2', etc. For having such a 'universal' interface, I would expect better integration with their own product line. It was a snap to install, and once I got the initial setup headache over with, I was able to pull in all three streams on my favorite station and I've been very happy with the reception. I think I've heard it switch to analog once... I switch between CD and HD tuner frequently, and the delay from the switch to HD and when the audio comes through is a little annoying as it takes a couple seconds.

First my background, I worked in a stereo shop from age 16 to 18 and I am an electrician. I have installed many stereos for friends and in my own vehicles over the years. I was excited about this whole HD radio thing so I bought two Pioneer F700BT head units along with two of these GEX-P10HD tuners and upon installation of the first unit into my truck, the tuner worked flawlessly with my head unit. Sound was crystal clear and and I pulled a strong signal. So I installed the second one into my wife's car and at first it worked well but then over a couple days the signal dropped out and the radio would stay on Analog and emit nothing but static. Upon switching the station to regular FM within the built-in tuner of the F700BT, the radio would pull a clear signal. So all evidence pointed toward the HD tuner. I opened my wife's car up and checked all connections and made sure there was an adequate ground and went step by step over everything that I had installed. To no avail, I got nothing but static from the HD tuner. So I ordered another one (they were only $50 at the time), thinking I just got a bunk unit. A few weeks later my HD tuner in my truck failed with the same symptoms. I checked all connections and retraced all steps. No matter what I tried, the result was that the tuner was junk. My wife's second one arrieved. Again, it pulled some good reception and then a few days later it died on us. Its kind of hard for me to believe I just got a "bad unit" when all three do not work. But I am curious if the unit might simply not be compatible with my head unit even though it is advertised as compatible. I have wondered if anyone has ever experienced this. Nevertheless, I must rate this unit as 1 star due to the simple fact that it does not seem to work correctly.

I ordered my equipment (DEH-P6000UB and GEX-P10HD) from Crutchfield late in June '09. After receiving my package about a week later, I commenced with the install. Soldered, heatshrunk, and taped all wire splices. The headunit has worked flawlessly since the install. Alas, in mid-October I noticed I was only receiving static through the HD tuner. I just though it was the particular station so I tuned through the whole spectrum only to find that I was getting absolutely no signal. I hooked the antenna to the headunit directly and was instantly getting signal. I also tested the power connector for the HD tuner with my multi-meter and found there was sufficient power. All grounds are tight. The HD tuner had died little over three months after install.
I contacted Pioneer support and they instructed me to send the faulty unit in with proof of purchase. After procrastinating for over 2 months, I finally sent it in (mailed out Jan. 4th, 2010). To my great surprise, when I got home from work tonight, I see a Pioneer box with "GEX-P20HD" on it. They had sent me the newer model, apparently because my unit was unserviceable. Anyway, I think the P10HD's have some issues with the build quality which suggests the reason for the release of the newer model (P20HD). Hopefully this one will last longer. The unit gets 4 stars as opposed to 1 (or 2) for a few different reasons: 1.) The unit was easy to install with the simple IP-Bus connectors and power connections. 2.) Before it died, the unit provided crystal clear HD reception. 3.) Most importantly, Pioneer's customer service knows how to handle problems. This is probably the most important thing.

I got this for my Avic D3, but you have to get the y-adapter for the antenna because I lost the AM/FM from the analog side.

Seems to work ok but some things just are not right, like even though you program the presets they are all blank other than the preset number. I searched around and it looks like its a known problem and sounds like Pioneer can't fix it becasue it is a software problem with the tuner and there is no way to update the firmware on the tuner.
Also doesn't get near as many stations as I would of expected. Many of my stations that I receive fine with a standard FM radio switch back and forth from digital to analog with this tuner. It was a toss up for me beteen the Satalite Radio tuner or this, I opted for this because the service is free, I should of bought the Satalite tuner! |
