1.0 out of 5 stars POOR PERFORMER FOR SUCH A HIGH PRICE., December 13, 2010

Mr Nobody. (springfield, virginia USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pioneer PRV-LX1 DVD/Hard Disc Recorder (Electronics)
THE PRV-LXI IS QUALITY BUILT,AND SOLID.I WAS IMPRESSED BY ITS GOOD LOOKS AND ALL THE HYPE SURROUNDING IT,I HAD TO HAVE ONE,NO LONGER IMPRESSED BUDDY..THE ENTIRE DEVICE IS CENTERED AROUND A HDD THAT IS EASILY CORRUPTED BY BAD MEDIA,POWER OUTAGES,STATIC AND THE LIKE.WAY MORE SENSITIVE THEN ANY COMPUTER I HAVE EVER SEEN.ITS LIFE SPAN HAS BEEN PLAGUED BY BUGS AND GLITCHES,HOWEVER PATCHES ARE AVAILABLE FROM PIONEER FOR FREE,BUT THE OS IS NOT.ITS A RED HAT LINUX 2.4 .20-2 VERSION MADE ESPECIALLY FOR PIONEER,1 GLITCH AND YOU CAN KISS YOUR MBR AND ROOT FILES GOODBYE.THE DECK WILL THEN NOT POWER UP AND BE STUCK IN A "POWER ON/PLEASE WAIT LOOP.PIONEER WILL NOT DISTRIBUTE THE OS SOFTWARE EITHER.THE CMOS SETTINGS ARE SENSITIVE AND IF THE SMALL INTERNAL BATTERY DIES IT WILL DEFAULT AND REFUSE TO BOOT/LOAD UNTIL CORRECTED.I HAVE FIXED 3 OF THESE,ALMOST ALL USED NON WORKING UNITS AND ALL HAD THE SAME ISSUE,HDD CORRUPTION,WHICH MAKES THE UNIT 100%NON FUNCTIONAL.IF YOU HAVE A WORKING UNIT ON A UPS YOU CAN USE INTERNAL FUNCTIONS TO MAKE A "MIRROR DRIVE'WITH A SECOND HDD.THE PROCEDURE IS IN THE PIONEER REPAIR MANUAL,AND BELIEVE ME DO THIS AT ONCE!!!!!AND KEEP 2 AS SPARES.99 PERCENT OF USED UNITS FOR SALE HAVE THIS SAME STUPID ISSUE. THIS WAS DISCONTINED IN 2007 AND I CAN SEE WHY.PIONEER DEMANDS THIS BE SENT IN FOR A 700.00-1500.00 REPAIR SERVICE,AND EASILY BROKEN PARTS SUCH AS COVERS AND FACE PLATES ARE OVERPRICED OR NON EXISTANT. I HAVE ALSO USED PANASONIC PRO MODELS FROM THE SAME ERA,AND THEY WORK BETTER AND AUTO RECOVER 99 PERCENT OF THE TIME.AND THEY COST 1/4 TO 1/3 AS MUCH AND ARE MUCH EASIER TO USE.IF YOU MUST HAVE A PRV-LX1,KEEP IT ON A UPS BATTERY BACK-UP,AWAY FROM ANY STAIC OR ELECTRO MAGNETIC FIELDS,AND ONLY USE QUALITY MEDIA,THE LAST 3 SUGGESTIONS ARE A MUST WITH THIS BEAST.WELL BUILT,SOILD JAPAN MACHINE,POORLY CONCIEVED COMPUTER BASED SYSTEM,WITH A TOTAL LACK OF RATIONAL SOFTWARE SUPPORT.TO RISKY AND EXPENSIVE TO BE USED FOR A DEMANDING BUSINESS.PLEASE CONSIDER ALL THE ABOVE BEFORE MAKING A DECISION ON THIS UNIT.I HOPE THIS SAVES YOU TIME AND MONEY.
BEST REGARDS,
ST.
