The Power, Performance and Precision of Class D3 Amplification

Direct Energy HD AMP and 11+1 Surround Modes
Pioneer SC-1523-K AV Receiver
Rated at 135 Watts x 9 channels, this is a formidable multi-channel AV receiver. View larger

Rated at 135 Watts x 9 channels, the SC-1523-K is a formidable multi-channel AV receiver. While lesser amplifiers' output diminishes as channels are added, the SC-1523-K has the power to drive multiple channels simultaneously with no significant drop in per-channel output. This ensures that you'll enjoy the full impact and dynamic range of high-resolution multi-channel audio as never before. Plus, the power consumption of the Digital Class D3 Amplifier is well below that of analog amplifiers, helping you to save energy, too.

All channels of the SC-1523-K employ ESS-DAC SABRE32 technology, the world's highest performance 32-bit audio DAC solution, delivering spectacular sound with a minimum of harmonic distortion.

Gapless playback, as the name suggests, eliminates sound gaps between consecutive tracks that were meant to be played continuously, such as with classical music, concept albums or live recordings.

That's four times the current HD standard! All of Pioneer's 2013 receivers can pass through 4K video signals to any compatible display, offering the highest quality image available.

BD Link Sound Retriever and BD Link Stream Smoother work together to ensure total fidelity from the original source, with no visual artifacts or out-of-sync audio at full HD resolutions, even in the fastest action scenes.

Transform Your Phone or Tablet into a Powerful Remote Control

Using Pioneer's free iControlAV2013, you can turn your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Android device into a powerful wireless remote control for the SC-75. You can even stream music stored on your phone through the SC-1523-K using the new "Push Player" feature.

AVNavigator Makes Set Up Easy

I give this a/v receiver 4.5 out of 5 stars. I dinged it half a star because bluetooth support is an additonal plugin adapter and wifi is also another plugin adapter. At this price point, I just don't see why these weren't built in, as nearly every other network device on the market today has built in bluetooth and wifi support.

That being said, this receiver has absolutely everything else you could ask for. For my setup, I have a cable box, a chromecast and a computer plugged into 3 of the hdmi ports. I have no analog devices connected nor any blu-ray/dvd/cd players. I am a strictly digital household and don't keep any optical media around. With the chromecast plugged into an hdmi port it does a nice job of filling in any network play options that this doesn't support natively. For instance, I don't use bluetooth to play from my phone, but instead I use chromecast to play music from phone, so it makes the lack of built in bluetooth less of an issue. Music and movies played thru chromecast are flawless. The only problem I ran into with setup is that my computer is connected thru a dvi to hdmi cable and I ran a seperate spdif out for audio, but I can't get htis to recognize the audio. I had it working on my old system, so I'm not sure exactly what the problem is. When I ran the setup, I told it spdif for this connection's audio and it appears to be setup that way.

Which brings me to another issue - complicated setups practically require you to use the included a/v nagigator software - I couldn't see how to manually set an input up for hdmi video in with spdif audio in But the software is really easy to use and walks you thru all the connections and prompts you to label each connection, which is super.

Coming out of the box, the first thing I noticed is how light the Pioneer SC-1523-K is for a receiver pushing 135 watts into 9.2 channels. Although its heft is similar to Sony and Yamaha receivers producing the same power, it is a fraction of the AB amps I still use in some applications. The class D amps of today are so efficient they don't need too much copper to store energy or all of those metal cooling fins that add weight. And for amps, being more efficient equals producing less heat which equals wasting less electricity. The Pioneer SC-1523-K produces much less heat than my Onkyo 7.2 channel receiver that is only two years old.

For the initial test drive, I setup the SC-1523-K in a 7.1 arrangement using front highs and connected it to the network via a network cable. I also connected a Blu-ray player, X-Box, Sharp LED TV and ATT U-verse DVR - all via HDMI. Then I added a Wii via the component cables. Getting started with the quick start guide was simple and I was able to access all components via the remote control without any other directions - even my NAS was readily available and music streaming was effortless. To finish off setup I updated the receiver with the latest firmware (give yourself about 20 minutes with a high speed connection for this step).

Speaker calibration was quick and easy with the included microphone and the SC-1523-K even let me know I had one of my speaker wires reversed, creating phase issues. I then installed AV Navigator from the included disk (which also has the operating manual). AV Navigator provides some help with wiring and will help with updates, if you need it. The only useful thing I found it provided is an interactive manual for quick references on a particular topic.

I am giving this receiver five stars but it really deserves 4 1/2 because the remote is so bad.

The SC-1523-K is quite powerful and sounds outstanding. I have a 7.2 setup using Paradigm tower fronts, Definitive center and surrounds, a JBL sub and a Definitive sub. In my 20x15 finished lower level room, it really is overkill (in a good way) because the receiver rocks the entire house with crystal clear, awesome surround sound and hardly gets warm.

I did a ton of research on receivers as my Onkyo TX-SR626 (from 2008) has been repaired twice from the HDMI board getting fried (the Onkyo gets very hot without proper external cooling). I read lots of reviews and listened to Marantz, Pioneer, Denon, and Yamaha in a store. The Pioneer sounded best with the Denon close behind. I went with the Pioneer because of the Class D3 amplifier and the heavier weight.

I am completely sold on the D3 amplifier as the case of the SC-1523-K really doesn't even get warm to the touch. The receiver is fairly large and heavy (the latter being a plus with receivers) but I have the space and enjoy looking at it and its large display.

Really my only complaint is about the remote. The remote is awful. It does have a red backlight which is somewhat useful but the buttons are so small and the secondary function labels are not lit up at all. The remote is very tall and has tons of buttons, all of which are small to barely average in size. It is very difficult to read the labels as the font is so small (I have 20/20 vision). The volume buttons aren't large enough for me to easily find them in the dark. For many common functions, Pioneer requires the user to press the remote's RECEIVER button (like a function key) first before the desired function button.
