Home loudspeakers are evaluated on a cost vs performance ratio, and these speakers, in their price category stand alone for performance characteristics. On balance they are equal to, or exceed sets costing twice as much. The main reason being is their bass performance. These are a little small for floorstanders, and too large for bookshelves, but that's the key to their success. No bookshelfs in their price range can get as low as these can because of their size, and no floorstanders can match them in that price range for refinement. The only drawback that I saw in them was their relatively low sensitivity, and somewhat recessed mid range. A quality mid level amp should be considered necessary for party level SPL's, but for a small to mid size room, 80 watts per channel should be sufficient for most users. I compared them to my Def Tech SM450's which retail for 3x the price of these, but can be had street price for 2x more, and they fared well. The Pioneers had a slightly better lower bass, and somewhat more refined character. I connected them to a PSB sub zeroi, and they blended seamlessly with the sub set at 75hz. These speakers can perform satisfactorily without a sub, but when one is added, the sound reproduction can approximate speakers costing way more. I wish I had known about them before I got the 450's as I could have saved $125 bucks, and have been just as happy. Those in the market for new speakers that can be used as bookshelves in the right environment, or as floorstanders using small speaker stands, must audition these before digging too deep for quality sound, and kicking yourself later on after hearing your friends set.

EDIT 1-25-2013: I finally received placement speakers, which are the newer model of these. I am completely satisfied with Pioneer support, but the process took a while, partially due to my fault. It was hard to find a box and pack the speakers. I recommend you keep the box. In the new version, each tower speaker comes in separate box.

EDIT 11-21-2012: A few weeks ago the tweeters suddenly "blew" (burn smell) in 3-4 towers during normal listening and I am working with Pioneer warranty. The bookshelves and center was fine. This is unacceptable and I believe the towers have a design flaw that caused this. I am using a Denon 2112ci AV receiver.

EDIT 10-9-2012: A new model of these speakers have been released. I am not sure if they are better or worse (supposedly better). The price of these will likely get to clearance status soon.

I bought these speakers including the matching center channel and 2 bookshelf/surround for my system about 4 months ago. BestBuy had a deal where the whole package was $280 (no joke) and I jumped on it.

Short version: These speakers are the best choice for someone on a budget.

I spent a lot of agonizing research to find the best speakers...which is hard because you can't really test them before purchase. Thus, I do not know exactly how every speaker sound systems and can only judge what others have recommended in reviews and my expedience with these.

Highlights/comments about these speakers:

They require the power output most AV receivers supply, meaning you are probably aren't going to over or under power them. A lot of more expensive speakers require separate amps and will not sound good with only a AV receiver. Fortunately, these are simply plug and play.

Well, I received the speakers on time (thanks Prime!) along with the Pioneer VSX-1022-K receiver. I set everything up that night and have been listening to various material since then. It wasn't until after playing with everything for a few days that I felt comfortable with the settings and feel that I have everything tuned correctly for a 2.0 setup. My settings...

* MCACC on
* Direct Stereo
* FSAA on
* Downmixing enabled
* lowered crossover to 50-Hz, as I'm not running a sub

Streaming Pandora from my Roku 2 XD sounds phenomenal. I put it on the "Hotel California by The Eagles" station and waited for Hotel California to come around. The older songs really know how to work a Hi-Fi system.

"Come Together by The Beatles" came on and the bass line and drum beats worked the low end. It sounded great; there was plenty of bass for me. The speakers go down to 45-Hz. I had the volume cranked to 50 and sat 10-feet away just absorbing the sound. They sound better than my Sennheiser PC-360 G4ME headphones.

Next up was "More Than a Feeling by Boston", which rocked the house. Much like how The Beatles song worked the bass line, this Boston song -- as you know -- is good at testing the highs. They were crisp, without warble, and powerful. I loved it.

Finally, "Hotel California by The Eagles" came on. It was the live edition, but the one with the extended guitar intro... which really is key. The acoustic guitar sounded clean and filled the whole spectrum of sound. The whole thing sounded great. I heard things I've only heard with my expensive headphones. It definitely outperforms the old ceramic hand-me-down speakers I was running with before.

Then I switched to some live HDTV content.
