Raising the Bar

For those who demand audio quality that lives up to their HD picture, Pioneer offers the new Speaker Bar System. Designed by internationally renowned speaker designer, Andrew Jones, this compact sound solution produces remarkable stereo imaging, wider off-axis response and enhanced dynamic range. Its speaker cabinet is precision-crafted from composite wood, offering more controlled resonance and truer audio reproduction. Six individual speakers are each driven by their own dedicated amplifier and integrated by an active digital crossover network. This symphony of audio innovations all work together to help create a listening experience that will virtually transport you into the action on screen.

An Amplifier for Each Speaker and a Wireless Subwoofer

Pioneer's Speaker Bar is powered by six individual amplifiers--one amplifier for each independent driver. The amps produce up to 28 Watts of power for increased audio dynamics and enhanced overall "headroom" at virtually any volume level. Handling the low frequencies is a wireless subwoofer, featuring a 6.5-inch driver that's powered by a built-in 50-Watt amplifier. Tuned to 42 Hz (-10 dB), the output level can be conveniently adjusted with the Speaker Bar remote.

Andrew Jones Designed for Those Who Care About Sound

Crafted by legendary speaker engineer Andrew Jones to deliver excellent full-range sound from a small, simple solution audio package. As Pioneer's Chief Speaker Engineer, Andrew has designed multiple lines of award winning loudspeakers ranging in price from $99 to $80,000 a pair. He is considered an audio master in the industry.

Sonic Integration using Active Crossover Network.

To help optimize speaker response, vocal clarity and off-axis listening, Andrew Jones added a matching active digital crossover network to the Speaker Bar system. This network allows for higher order filter points, enhancing the audio transitions between the woofers and the tweeters.

System Smarts with Remote Control Learning Mode

While the Speaker Bar system includes a remote control unit, most people prefer to control everything with their favorite remote. That's why Pioneer gave the Speaker Bar a special learning mode that lets you quickly teach the system to respond to commands from any remote you choose.

True Resonance from a Composite Wood Cabinet

Most sound bars on the market have enclosures made of plastic. Pioneer's Speaker Bar features a composite wooden cabinet enclosure with a special curved design, helping it resist the "flexing" that can occur when the speakers are at high volume. With its superior resistance to undesirable resonance, genuine wood provides more faithful sound reproduction.

Dolby Digital decoding
Sonic Standard with Dolby Digital Decoding

Helping to ensure that the entertainment experience is rich and immersive, the Speaker Bar includes Dolby Digital Decoding. The standard in home theater systems, Dolby Digital Decoding delivers crisp, clean dialogue, excellent audio imaging, and powerful deep bass.

Three Sound Modes for Selective Listening

The Speaker Bar offers three sound modes: Movies, Music and Dialogue. The Movies mode enhances the dynamic, explosive sound characteristics of modern movies. The Music mode is optimized for the most natural reproduction of music. The Dialogue mode optimizes the quality of spoken words, while significantly reducing loud sequences, making it ideal for late night viewing.

Get Streaming using Bluetooth Technology

Adding even more convenience to the Speaker Bar system is built-in Bluetooth technology. This advanced technology enables you to stream music wirelessly from your compatible smartphone or tablet. Immersive audio doesn't have to be complicated. Pioneer's Speaker Bar system is designed to make set-up simple. With minimal cables to connect and an easy subwoofer synchronization process, you'll be enjoying a remarkable entertainment experience in just minutes.

Product Description

Utilizing technology and componentry derived from the Andrew Jones line of award- winning home theater speakers, Pioneer's Speaker Bar is designed with the primary goal of producing the most immersive, natural and room-filling sound experience for both movies and music.

As issues occurred and I discovered how difficult it is to get in touch with Pioneer support, I realized that this review was going to be a critical one.

Dialogue is crisp and clear, bass is rich and not too boomy, and music sounds great with a lot of presence.

At current price, this sound bar is one of the best sounding bar in the $250 - $400 range. The sound is full, rich, well balanced and a pleasure to listen to. I haven't A/B compared with brands like Klipsch, B&W, Yamaha or Onkyo sound bars but in comparison with other electronics manufacturers' brands such as Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic or Sharp's sound bars in similar price range, Pioneer trumps them all in sonic quality. It doesn't matter what feature the sound bar claims to have (like 3D sound processing, multi-channel virtual surround, sound enhancing processing gimmicks) unless the speaker actually has good drivers to begin with. Listening to music with this sound bar was the closest thing to listening to a regular pair of speaker - wide, balanced and full. The small subwoofer that comes with the sound bar delivers clean and powerful bass without distorting or muddying mid/high tones. If you are shopping to get the best sound as the top priority, this should do the job. If connectivity and DSP gimmicks are more important, you should look elsewhere.

What I like:
- Sound quality (5/5). It is closest thing to real speakers that is pleasing to listen for both music or watching movies and TV programs. Most sound bars that I tested amplified voice/mid frequency too much to a point that made it annoying when listening to music or sounded tinny/boxy.
- Wireless compact subwoofer delivers clean and tight bass
- Bluetooth is now fixed but the range is short and sensitive to blockage (iphone sync performed better than macbook pro -12+ft vs. 3-4ft.

After searching for the better part of 6 months, I had pretty much come to trying to decide between the Sony HT-CT660, Samsung HW-F750, or wait for the Pioneer SP-SB23W. After carefully considering the Samsung because of its ease of connectivity with my Samsung UN46ES7500 LED and the Sony for it's multiple HDMI inputs through which I could run all of my components (3d bluray, xbox 360, cable, etc) without having to go through the TV first, I finally decided to take a chance with the Pioneer and the technical abilities of Andrew Jones.

While it would have been nice to have unimpeded sound going straight through the soundbar and pass-through video to the TV, the ability of a soundbar to create true surround sound is more gimmicky to me than anything else. While the wireless connectivity of the Samsung to my TV would have been visually appealing, what truly matters in the end is the way the speaker/soundbar itself sounds. Having tested many soundbars and going back and forth between different ones in test environments, I can honestly say that this soundbar is by far the best I have heard, and at a price that is very wallet friendly.

Connection via the included optical cable is easy. Crossover between the subwoofer and the soundbar is excellent. The quality of the sound, whether from the optical cable or through bluetooth, is very impressive and something that I've been missing for a long time. While I know that actually surround sound speakers in a 5.1 or 7.1 would sound much better for a movie, this bar does exactly what it was designed to do... put out great sound.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Below is my original review. I have upgraded my rating to 3 stars after receiving my replacement unit. I give the soundbar itself 4 stars, but still feel I have to knock off a star due to the embarrassing problems with the originally shipped units, difficulty contacting customer support, and Pioneer's delay in acknowledging the problem. The tone I got from Pioneer and fanboys of the product seemed to be annoyance that I discovered a serious flaw that required a recall.

Anyway, with the updated Bluetooth, the soundbar sounds very good using optical, stereo audio, and Bluetooth. Bluetooth pairing is easy, but the unit can only pair to one device at a time. To pair with a different device you must unpair it from the device itself. You can't just clear the Bluetooth pair from the soundbar because is will automatically repair with the original device. Also, when using Bluetooth, when a new song starts, the first second of sound is sometimes clipped. I have not had this problem with Bluetooth headsets. I'm not sure what the reason is.

I do like this soundbar and will be keeping it hooked up for now.

I hate to have to give a negative review of this speaker bar. I was very excited to be offered the opportunity to test it and at first was fairly impressed. As issues occurred and I discovered how difficult it is to get in touch with Pioneer support, I realized that this review was going to be a critical one. For specs, read the Amazon description. You don't need me to repeat any of that.

First, the unboxing. This speaker bar comes in a very large box, much or which is empty space. That is because the speaker bar is long and thin, and the subwoofer is a cube.
